I'm lukewarm about this book

Few would disagree that the guitar is a difficult instrument to learn and master. Many people walk away from the guitar as soon as it starts to hurt their fingers. Many who make it past that stage still end up abandoning the guitar within 6 months to a year for various reasons usually relating to frustration and discouragement. I've been a guitarist for many years now and if there's one thing I've learned it's to keep things simple. The simpler the better really. So when I come across an author who seems to go out of his or her way make the guitar more complicated than it already is I get turned off.
A number of people have said they were left scratching their heads when they first went through this book. I think it has to do with the author's tendency to take a more complicated approach to any given subject than is really necessary. I can see what the author is after. For him it's all about exploring the unexplored. He wants to always be thinking outside the box. I get it. But still I think the extra complications he adds could be avoided.
The copy I have was published way back in 1987. I can't help but wonder if the author would still take the same approach today. I doubt it. But the fact remains that this book has stood the test of time while so many others are long since out of print and forgotten. That counts for something. On the other hand, another reviewer made a reference to the story of the emperor's clothes. I have to agree that's an uncanny analogy.
I'm not trashing this book. Don't get me wrong. And heaven forbid I should invoke the wrath of what appears to be a small cult following around this book. I just think some of the enthusiasm I've seen regarding this book is a bit over the top. I also think there are other books that get the same information across in a way that's far easier to understand.
I've gone through this book several times now. I'll shelve it for awhile and then go through it again to see if it does more for me than the last time I read it. But each time I just never get very excited about it. Certainly nowhere near the level of some of the raving reviews I've seen. It's partly because I'd already learned much of what the author talks about before I came across this book. And then there were a number of things I simply didn't agree with or that I thought were of little use to me personally.
When it comes to guitar instruction books and videos, I guess it gets down to personal taste. One of my favorite books is "The Guitar Cookbook" which I bought at the same time I bought "The Advancing Guitarist." The two are somewhat similar although they take an entirely different approach. Another favorite was "How to Play the Piano Despite Years of Lessons." That may have been the single most important music book I've ever read despite the fact that it has nothing to do with the guitar. But it's possible others could read those books and get very little out of them.
In "The Advancing Guitarist" you'll find some choice nuggets of wisdom. And while I wasn't nearly as impressed as so many others seem to be, one thing that really does come across is the author's passion for exploring every facet of the guitar from every possible angle. This book can help you break out of any molds, narrow grooves or boxes you may have allowed yourself to get stuck in. That could make it well worth the price of admission for certain people.
What you get out of this book seems to depend on where you are as a guitarist. And although you could end up confused or frustrated reading this book by itself it can put some important questions in your mind that you might not otherwise think to ask. With diligence you'll find the answers one way or another. As the author said it's up to you what use you make of this book.
