Software design is a multi-disciplinary activity that develops tools through effective communication of ideas and the use of engineering practices. This text provides an overview and perspective of software design within the context of software development and also of more general thinking about design issues. It examines the nature of design activities, as well as their applications within software development, providing the reader with:
- a non-proprietary view of design issues
- an overview of design representation forms
- a concise review of design practices based on the more widely used design methods
- a strong architectural framework
A particular feature is the strong evidence-based approach used in the analysis and assessment of these issues.
Since the first edition, much progress has been made in the area of software design, with the major changes to the new edition being:
- A much stronger recognition of the role played by the concept of architectural style in helping to structure ideas about design. This is used to provide an underpinning framework throughout the second edition.
- The inclusion of new forms of software and of new approaches to design, ranging from agile methods and design patterns through to the component concept and the use of the Unified Modeling Language (UML).

Review of ebook format

If you have anything less than a 10" tablet, you may be better off getting a psyhical copy of the book. The text in this book does not flow based on the size of your tablet. It's the equalivent of having to zoom in on a PDF file and pan around to read the entire text.
This book only works on a kindle device, andriod or iPhone/iPad device. No using it with the kindle Web or Windows app.

Great Textbook

While the published date is a bit old, the book contents are very much relevant as the fundamentals of software engineering remain the same. We used this text in one of our grad courses and personally, I preferred it over Pressman's SEPA 8E.

Very abstract, very high level, very old

If you have to buy it for a class, get it. Otherwise, find something that was written more recently. Although the 2nd Edition shows a 2003 date, the vast majority of the text is obviously out of date and was written about 20 years ago. It has one chapter on object oriented design and it discusses it almost as if it were a passing fad. If there's a 3rd edition, let's hope it gets rewritten and doesn't just get a few references updated.
