About the Author
Donald M. DePamphilis has a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University and has managed more than 30 acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, minority investments, as well as licensing and supply agreements. He is currently Clinical Professor of Finance at the College of Business Administration at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. He has also taught mergers and acquisitions and corporate restructuring at the Graduate School of Management at the University of California, Irvine, and Chapman University to undergraduates, MBA, and Executive MBA students. He has published a number of articles on economic forecasting, business planning, and marketing. As Vice President of Electronic Commerce at Experian, Dr. DePamphilis managed the development of an award winning Web Site. He was also Vice President of Business Development at TRW Information Systems and Services, Director of Planning at TRW, and Chief Economist at National Steel Corporation.

5 stars for book's content; knocked off one star due to flaws in electronic version

This book's content is excellent, in my opinion. I will leave content reviews to others.

My review is intended to warn potential buyers of a couple of flaws in the electronic versions (Kindle for Mac and Kindle for iPhone). They are not fatal flaws, but they do detract a little from the reading experience.

Problem #1. Being a finance textbook, it includes finance equations. On both the Mac and the iPhone, you must use the View Options tool to set the background to Black in order to read the formulas. If you set the background to Sepia or White, those equations render so poorly on screen, that they become unreadable. They look like a low-resolution scan of a scan of scan. Broken, incomplete, moth-eaten. Timeworn, like something out of an ancient manuscript.

In the Mac version, they are not separate images, so they can't be enlarged. In the iPhone version, enlargement is possible and actually exposes the underlying cause of the problem: the Kindle software superimposes a layer of lighter-color text on top of the equations' native black type, thereby making the final result so hard to interpret. I find myself needing to constantly toggle background colors between Sepia (easier on the eyes for general reading) and Black (to read formulas).

To the editor: please either remove the added text layer, or convert the equations to type, in the same font as the remainder of the textbook.

Problem #2. In the iPhone version, touching the footnote hyperlinks only seems to work in one direction: forward. In other words, touching a numbered footnote embedded in the text works as expected (it take the reader to the linked footnote at the end of the chapter), but when the reader attempts to reverse direction and go back to the original reading point, it doesn't work -- the Kindle software merely moves a single page backward.

Perhaps this problem is due to the fact that footnote text is left-aligned, instead of being indented. Since the footnote hyperlinks are so close to the left edge of the phone screen, it seems logical the the software would be unable to tell that the reader's finger is trying to touch a hyperlink, not trying to go back one page.

To the editor: please try indenting footnote text to see whether this fixes the problem.

About the Author
John Norman, born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1931, is the creator of the Gorean Saga, the longest-running series of adventure novels in science fiction history. Starting in�December 1966 with�Tarnsman of Gor, the series was put on hold after its twenty-fifth installment,�Magicians of Gor, in 1988, when DAW refused to publish its successor,�Witness of Gor. After several unsuccessful attempts to find a trade publishing outlet, the series was brought back into print in 2001. Norman has also produced a separate science fiction series, the Telnarian Histories, plus two other fiction works (Ghost Dance�and�Time Slave), a nonfiction paperback (Imaginative Sex), and a collection of thirty short stories, entitled�Norman Invasions.�The Totems of Abydos�was published in spring 2012.�

All of Norman’s work is available both in print and as ebooks. Reads like one of the first six novels

Although no overt spoilers appear in this review some minor ones do.
For those who haven't read REBELS OF GOR please proceed with caution.

REBELS OF GOR overflows with a wow factor absent from the series for almost 40 years. First, and most noticeably, the usually predominant theme of slavery is almost nowhere in sight, only about 40 of the 644 pages of the novel are given over to it, approximately 5% of the book. That leaves over 600 pages of action-filled plot happening and John Norman crafts a story as serpentine as the one in ASSASSIN OF GOR. Read REBELS and you'll find out that's not just hyperbole. It truly is like the days of yore on Gor again, swordplay, political intrigue, large cast with character reversals, confronting/eluding the bad guys, breaking out of (and into) locked rooms, hand-to-hand combat with Kur, and more. After a couple of hundred pages of little or no slavery discussion at all I thought it so odd I asked myself had Norman written this book, as have other reviewers. He wrote it all right, it's just he hasn't written a Gor novel like REBELS since Ballantine published his books. And, aside from a few insignificant loose ends, the series could conclude with this 33rd volume.

REBELS ends a six novel arc where, among other things, Tarl Cabot finally sails across mighty Thassa in a giant ship that's been spoken of since the sixth book of the series. The voyage takes up nearly all of MARINERS OF GOR, another engrossing read. The big boat finally docks on foreign shores and Cabot integrates into a samurai culture, gets in the middle of some shogun/daimyo warring factions, outsmarts not only the 'men of two swords' but the Priest-Kings and Kurii too. A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS and YOJIMBO are two movies inspired by, but nothing like, Dashiell Hammett's RED HARVEST; for a while I thought Norman was going to turn REBELS OF GOR into his own version of Yojimbo, but he did not. Even though I saw a few things coming chapters before they happened that did not lessen the reading experience for me.

The author John Norman turned 82 in 2013. In the last six years he wrote well over a million words, most of it stands with the best of what he published through Ballantine and Daw Books. Hopefully he'll continue adding to the series, but if he doesn't the Gor chronicles are a fantasy milestone as is.

Fans Enjoy

First, I am a John Norman fan. I have been reading this series for 30 some years now. So you can judge as you will.

This is the wrap up book of the current story line. (No spoilers) Tarl (main character) is in the equivalent of Japan in this twin world to Earth. He's been there in the last few books, so no surprise there. Plus, over the years Mr. Norman has take Tarl from region to region, people to people around the planet. What has changed is that in the past all that took place in a single book. You could pick up ALMOST any book in the series (1-33) and have a good read that mostly started and ended between the covers. However, in the last few books the entire story has been on a much larger scale and only now after several books do we get to where this saga in Tarl's life wraps up. I believe many readers of the last few books will be very happy to see all (mostly) of the story threads of late wrapped up very nicely. Good job Mr. Norman. But for anyone grabbing their first Gor Saga, well this would not be the best starting point.

I remember my first book was #8. I was able to enjoy that book by itself without knowing more about the world or the main characters. I went on to read them all, with them all together painting a far more complex and larger story, but each book being like bricks in a building. Each one, each brick/book separate from the others, but when stacked together something else. Not all books focused on the main character and some go more SciFi than sword and brawn, but all are Gor. Of late however there has been a more serial nature to the stories. Each is separate with clear start and end, but these have been more tightly linked together.

This last book mostly closes this thread in the far east. It also closes (?) a long time question from far back in earlier books. All in all a very enjoyable book for fans and something to look forward to for those just starting out in the series.

A finale? I hope not

I've been reading John Norman's Gor series for decades. The first, Tarnsman of Gor was great. Since that one there have been some that were great and a few that really left a lot to be desired. Most of those being the stories written from the slave girl's point of view. Norman can be extremely long winded, especially about his philosophy on slavery. Some of his details, however, such as the minting of coins and manufacture of weapons and warships is quite interesting. I've long since learned when to skip forward a few paragraphs or even a page or two.

This novel wound up a storyline that has been going on a few novels. For that I am glad. I've read speculation in these reviews this was his last novel in the series because of his age. But, there were strings left dangling. It seems Tarl has grown up enough to be beyond Talena. He seems to be set on using his real name now instead of his alias Bosk. But, will he be able to return to his holding in Port Kar where he did a lot of maturing? Will we find out if his speculation about the gamble at the World's End was correct? Will he return to the Priest Kings as one of their agents? I suspect the answer is no to that one, but, who knows?

The Gorean novels are the basis of a whole side of S&M, but as a whole the stories don't really have much in the way of sex, and if you skip over his lectures about how much women love being slaves, well, you'll find an interesting series of adventure stories set on a world that is in some ways barbaric and in others more pure and pristine.

I truly recommend you start at the first novel, it was pretty much the only story that stood alone. After that, a series of story arcs began. Even the slave girl stories added details to previous novels and gave hints as to where the next one was going. The last dozen or so pretty much depended on you knowing the back stories and understanding the characters.

I love quotes and have many written in journals and hundreds in folders, printed large enough to post on my office door. I teach dance in academia (right now) and it can be a challenge to motivate students to risk enough that they learn to live fully. This book provides a wealth of inspirational quotes I will be able to add to my motivational door collage.

I'm not patient enough to read only one/day, so will share a few of my favorites from the book. Today the ones that stop me as I browse the book are the ones about continuing in the face of adversity: especially day 28: "Fall seven times and stand up eight." ~Japanese Proverb. Also all of General George Patton's seem relevant to my life right now.

Getting back up, sharing what motivates and inspires me, leading by example - this is how I live my life and I'm writing this review because it seems that this is what author Kevin Kruse does also. I will enjoy this book for many years to come. If you're reading this review I'll assume it's because you're interested in buying this book - I encourage you to do so. I don't think it's possible to have too much inspiration!

Fodder for Reflection

This book is full of fodder for reflection. For some my response was, "Yes, yes!" for others it was, "Huh! I never thought of it that way before." Being a book of quotes on leadership the connection of many of the quotes was obvious, but for others the connection was more subtle. You had to think about it some, and that is what made those powerful. These quotes are the kind you want to copy onto a sticky note and leave on your computer monitor for a week, so you can spend time chewing on it.

Looking forward to my best year ever...

I read this book because I am fascinated by words and dialects and how (some) linguistics experts can tell where you grew up just from the way you speak.

"Do You Speak American" satisfied my craving to learn more about dialect in the United States but it went WAY beyond my expectations.

In addition to presenting and discussing a FASCINATING map of major dialect regions and changes in the U.S., this book addresses two key current social issues: The (unfounded) phobia that Spanish will take over from English as the dominant language of the United States, and the (still valid) issue that even as "African American English" contributes to our culture, it separates many kids from economic mainstream access through linquistic prejudice (e.g., "if you sound like THAT you must be DUMB")

The book doesn't stop there but continues addressing MORE fascinating topics including the origins of "Valley Girl/Surfer Dude" California dialects (like, totally!) and computer speech recognition efforts by BMW and Microsoft.

I found the overall tone of the book UPBEAT. The research findings and interpretations presented show it's quite possible and quite HUMAN to be "bilingual" in DIALECTS as well as languages. So that we can maintain our language-based identity (where we grew up) AND claim our stake in the mainstream economy.

Good, but thin

"Do You Speak American?" is another fine contribution by Robert MacNeil and William Cran, coauthors of "The Story of English". As this is a companion book to the televised series this recent offering does not stand alone but serves as the program's enhancement.

Those of us who have followed Mr. MacNeil through his many journeys around the world in search of the ways English is enriched will find worthy chapters in "Do You Speak American?" Highlighted areas include the South, Hispanics and Black English....these three chapters encompass close to half of the book. Mr. MacNeil delivers his findings in his usual straightforward, buttoned-down Nova Scotia style. That isn't to say there isn't any humor...there is...but his earnestness keeps everything on track.

My disappointment in "Do You Speak American?" is that it doesn't cover enough ground. While "The Story of English" was a major undertaking, this seems puny by comparison. It was as if the book was written almost in haste to accommodate the tv program (which, by the way, is better than the book). The north and the midwest get far less attention so the book has an unbalanced feeling to it. That said, the portions that the authors delve into most carry a certain fascination and the narrative style to which we have been accustomed is as flawless as ever. The final chapter is an odd one, but an important one....how computers take on their own "language" and how that affects us. Some of the best (and most humorous) paragraphs in the book deal with the speech-recognition system in BMWs and the reaction of owners to it.

Perhaps Mr. MacNeil and Mr. Cran will do a follow-up to "Do You Speak American?" I hope they do. There's so much more to discover and these coauthors are just the men to continue looking into the many facets of "American English".
