About the Author
Dorothea Brande (1893-1948) was a well-respected writer and editor in New York. She was born in Chicago and attended the University of Chicago, the Lewis Institute in Chicago (later merged with Armour Institute of Technology), and the University of Michigan. Her book Becoming a Writer, published in 1934, is still in print and offers advice for beginning and sustaining any writing enterprise. She also wrote Wake Up and Live!, published in 1936, which sold over two million copies.

I woke up and conquered

Very insightful book with the power to give people a somewhat jolting wake-up call about our habits and patterns (conscious and unconscious) of procrastinating and wasting our lives kidding ourselves (and others) into believing we are being more productive than we actually are. The author points out that what we define as the "will to succeed" more often than not is, incredulously, in truth a "will to fail."
By taking an honest look at our actions (and non-action or substitute activities such as ongoing preparedness), as well as our own history of goal-reaching success, we can see that most people approach their goals in a manner that guarantees failure. She gives many fascinating examples in which you may recognize yourself and your friends/family/co-workers. She suggests, "...instead of trying to start, or swearing that you will start, or deceiving yourself into thinking that you are going to start tomorrow or the day after - beset by all the usual doubts of your own performance and memories of past pain ... refuse to contemplate the possibility of failure."
I can't really explain it, but despite its old-school style writing and its imperfect grammar and punctuation, this book motivated and empowered me to tackle and complete a huge project in just 4 days that for the past 20 years has proved too overwhelming for me to ever complete (going through stacks of paperwork piles until each and every piece of paper in my home was either filed, shredded or thrown away). This included cleaning out a 4-drawer file cabinet, a 2-drawer file cabinet, 3 portable file boxes, a large toy box and laundry basked full of stacked papers (where I would stash them away when I couldn't deal with them), and even some bags and boxes full of paper stashes that ended up in the garage over the years. It feels amazing to accomplish this, and I'm energized and excited to get going with my next project with the same "failure's not an option - nothing's going to stop me" attitude.
I didn't actually finish reading the book, as I felt it went downhill as the pages went on, but I got more than enough value out of the first few chapters to literally change my life. Thanks Dorothea!

Wow! No wonder this is a classic!

I cannot say enough about the transformational content of this book. Simply written, it calls us as individuals to face profoundly the reality we have chosen to espouse in our lives. Dorothea Brande inspires you to question who you are and where you are truly going, and why you were put on this earth to begin with. This book, a classic for good reason, and hard to come by, is a must read for anyone who wishes to glimpse and eventually reach their true and full potential. This is not rocket science but the material presented is just the kick in the butt most of us can benefit from in facing those things which are keeping us from our goals and dreams. It greatly helps that this book was written in a time when people still understood and appreciated tradition, protocol, and standards of behavior - expecting such behavior from themselves and others. It serves today as a "wake up" call to return to the basics of just LIVING! - instead of trying to please everyone around us (to be seen as "cool") or finding excuses for why we are the way we are and simply settling. This is a short easy read with the maximum amount of impact; a book that can be consulted over and over again in years to come. Thank you to the author for writing this book (she wrote it out of frustration in her own life in her late 30's! so there is time for all of us who wish to change and "Wake Up and Live").

Gets me into a state of courage by staring into the mirror of my fears

The Will to Fail is a very confronting principle. This is an old "act to succeed" book that boils it all down to the essentials. Straight to point and like a gentle rap across the knuckles of my mind. Reading this directed me to those scared little corners in my mind and shone a halogen lamp. Leaving nothing but reason and courage to overcome remaining.
Boy, did it get a lot out of this quick read.
I have been reading a lot of personal success books lately, I have this one to be the best to implant the hard philosophical machinery I will use every day to overcome the "Will to Fail" that all of us are susceptible to. It is like an inertia to realising our true potential and reaching all our lofty dreams.
I rarely take the time to write reviews, that tells me something about this book and the impression it left on me.
Why not 5 stars? Im a harsh marker now since reading this.
