I've been an avid romance novel reader for many years and I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the change so much

This was my first fantasy romance to read. I've been an avid romance novel reader for many years and I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the change so much. The author drew me in to the characters early on and kept me intrigued throughout the book. I was able to visualize the fantasy location created and believe that it actually existed. The love story was sweet and frustrating, as any good romance can be, as Ivy finds love, but fights it and Dredd can't figure out how to express it without pushing Ivy away. I look forward to more books by this author and more branching out into the world of fantasy romance!

Ivy Black is a kitchen slave for the ShadowBorn nobles. Dredd is a scarred and shunned warrior of the feared Ajax tribe. The Ajax area tribe of huge people with fangs who are very fierce. When the ShadowBorn decide to sacrifice a maiden it's Ivy's name drawn from the basket. So she finds herself tied to a tree in the Dark Woods waiting for what she has no idea. Dredd is hunting in the Dark Woods and smells her and realizes she's a Vessel, someone who might be able to get him back into the good graces of his tribe. He rescues her from another warrior and bites her to mark her and keep her safe from the other Ajax. Ivy doesn't want to be a slave and sure doesn't want to be mated to an Ajax so one night she drugs him and escapes. She ends up at hiding from Dredd at a brothel where she's the maid. During Dredd's hunt for Ivy he joins the Beast of Sport, sort of a traveling gladiator show, where he's the undefeated champion. When he finds Ivy he takes her in more ways than one. Now Ivy has to decide if she wants to be his mate and stay with him or run back to the brothel. Is there a HEA is their future or are they doomed? I enjoyed this book and thought the characters were well written and the storyline flowed well. Who doesn't like a book about a maiden and an strong alpha male who swoops in and takes what he wants. The book was exciting and well thought out. Liked the characters and could relate to the relationship issues. Plot developed in a real life way so you knew why these characters acted as they did. I hope there are many more books by Ms. Arcangelo to follow. I am not always pleased when I buy a book but this one was worth every penny.

Doctor, I am so glad you have read this, I have chronic DP/DR

I have struggled with this from childhood and have fought my way through the mental health system for about 35 years. I am now 50. I thought I was one of about 4 people in the world who had this, per SO many professionals, until the internet, when all of us came out of the woodwork to see we were not alone.

I am furious with the medical profession, and tremendously grateful for Dr. Sierra's work. I beg that all mental health professionals become aware of this, ASAP.

If I could I would buy copies for every psychiatrist/therapist I've ever seen who "doesn't get it" or those who have told me to "get over it." Medical residents have absolutely no clue about it though it is a common symptom of panic attacks. Neurologists are very informed about DP/DR. What happened to the study of neurology in psychiatry? One current medical resident who has seen me doesn't even understand what deja-vu is. How is that possible?

I'm sorry I am so angry, but now feel vindicated. Again thank you Dr. Sierra for your tireless efforts. For the first time in my life I have a grain of hope that all DP/DR sufferers will not be neglected or dismissed any more. I was thrilled when "Feeling Unreal" came out, but I feel this will have a far greater impact on the medical community, PLEASE.

Also, all psychiatrists out there -- anti-psychotics may help some of us, but in many cases (including my own) they can cause DP/DR to become unbearable.

The best book yet on depersonalization

Depersonalization is a symptom that is completely private; it has no observable signs. During chronic depersonalization, one's emotional connection to body, self, and world vanishes. One's normal background sense of aliveness is replaced with a pervasive, muzzy numbness. One feels distant and disconnected from one's thoughts, actions, emotional reactions, and body sensations -- indeed, from everything that one is experiencing. This is a very unpleasant state.

Although depersonalization is the third most common psychiatric symptom (after anxiety and depression), it has received little attention until recently. At present, there are two major depersonalization research teams -- one in New York and the other in London. This book is written by the leader of the London team at King's College's Institute of Psychiatry -- Mauricio Sierra. Dr. Sierra is probably the world's leading scholar and researcher of depersonalization.

The prevalence of depersonalization disorder (DPD), the most chronic and severe form of depersonalization, is about 1%. Although this prevalence is comparable to that of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, DPD is sorely under-diagnosed (Read: routinely misdiagnosed). The average person with DPD spends 12 years in the mental health system before receiving the correct diagnosis. Sierra attributes this to three factors. First, "most psychiatrists are still trained to believe that depersonalization disorder is extremely rare or non-existent" (p. 3). Second, psychiatrists' standard mental status examination contains no questions about depersonalization. Third, persons with DPD have difficulty describing their peculiar experiences and are often reluctant to disclose them (for fear of being thought to be 'crazy').

The onset of depersonalization disorder typically occurs during adolescence. It is usually chronic and is frequently associated with other psychiatric disorders (especially panic disorder and social anxiety disorder). Its most frequent predisposing factors and triggers are acute stress or trauma, illicit use of certain drugs, the presence of an anxiety disorder, and a childhood history of emotional abuse.

DPD has long been thought to be substantially untreatable. Sierra, however, provides a detailed description of the ways that DPD is beginning to respond to both psychotherapy and medication. Clearly, Sierra intends this book for clinicians and researchers. It is an excellent book that advances the field.

Finally, although this book is not aimed at those who suffer from DPD, the book may be of considerable interest to them as well. If nothing else, this superb little volume may serve as a guide and an encouragement to patients who have been contending with mental health professionals who are clueless about DPD (as is unfortunately the case in many instances).

I am a trained and Board Certified (in the US) Psychiatrist, with 11 years of experience. I was shocked to see that Depersonalization Disorder is such a common syndrome, and one about which so much is known, as Dr. Sierra, a true expert in the topic, brilliantly explains, in this "little" gem of a book (it can easily be read in a week or less). His knowledge about the syndrome is wide and deep. His respect for the topic and the reader are evident throughout the book, in things such as how well referenced, how clear and easy to read, and how up to date it is. From epidemiology to diagnosis, from neurobiology to pharmacological and psychotherapeutic approaches, everything you want to know (and more) about Depersonalization is here. The other shocking thing is to see how truly neglected (as the title says) this syndrome has been. Thanks to this book, I will now have Depersoalization more present when I am doing my diagnostic evaluations. This book is another proof (as if more were needed) that it behooves American and European Psychiatries to communicate more and to learn more from each other(some of that is already happening, increasingly so).

Im a first year fellow so I have a lot of different review books on different cardiology topics... My echo books are poorly written... This one is so completely clear and easy to read with the absolute best pictures and explanations!!! And my interventional cardiology attending (who is quite well-known in her own right and highly experienced) has taught me the same exact things of the top of her head... So I believe this book will give you a great foundation and thorough review of cath from my point of view as a cardiology fellow

Dana Percec (b. 1976) is Associate Professor at the University of the West, Timisoara, Romania. She has a BA in English, an MA in British and American Studies and a PhD in English Literature from the University of the West, Timisoara, Romania. Her main areas of interest are English literature, cultural studies, gender studies and language teaching. She has authored several books on Shakespeare and English culture, including The Body's Tale: Some Ado about Shakespearean Identities; Shakespeare and the Theatre: An Introduction; Anglia elisabetana. Ghid de istorie culturala [Elizabethan England: A Cultural History Guide]; Drama and Culture in Shakespeare's Age; and Anglia victoriana. Ghid de istorie culturala [Victorian England: A Cultural History Guide], and a collection of essays, titled De la Gargantua la Google [From Gargantua to Google], 2007. Past its prime but still sets the standard

Jacob Bronowski's The Ascent of Man was one of several documentary style miniseries that created a market for and set the standard for thoughtful television programs of the type we should expect from the History Channel or Arts and Entertainment. The Ascent of Man along with the Civilization Series, Connections, and Cosmos proved that there was a large market for intellectually challenging and enlightening discussion extending over many weeks and many topics. These were not the first efforts in this direction, I can remember Leonard Bernstein doing televised lectures about music some time before the above mentioned programs but these took hold and proved that there was in fact a market for quality programming.

This however is a review of a text only version. This book reprodes Prof. Bronowski's lectures with very few of the visuals. In these lectures, rather 13 chapters the reader is taken from the beginning of man as a social, culturally artistic and technologically inventive being up into at least the 1970s, when this book was first published, and what was then emerging as the DNA driven understanding of human biology.

I am deeply impressed with the depth and breath of the authors intellect plus his immense skill with English. He was Polish born and did not come to English until he was much older. His original background shifted from a specialty in the mathematics of physics into a later career in biology while gaining recognition as a poet, historian, philosopher and (this is new to me) a "theater author". All of these skills were powerfully displayed in the television series and this is the source of my reservation over a fifth star for the book. My memories of this program from almost 30 years ago are tied to what were then some very high-tech graphics. The absence of the visuals affected my ability to appreciate the text. The power of Bronowski's language is here; unfortunately the text has not been scrubbed of all references to the images not carried over into the text.

Others have mentioned that science is moved forward, indeed leaped forward since this text was put in print. It is remarkable how much of what is here remains valid in itself or at least as a document of where our understanding was before it got to where it is. The very name of the book suggests that human progress his ongoing. A major theme of this book is that a failure to press ahead represents an ending for that culture but not an ending for human progress.

Accepting that some of the science is dated, my recommendation is based on the powerful use of language and the opportunity to spend time with a deeply thoughtful and passionate thinker

Very interesting perspective.

If you like James Burke and history from a technology point of view, you will like this book!

Here is an example of one of the things I found interesting in this book. The wheel is always rated as humans greatest invention; largely because every other invention (almost) uses the wheel. But People used logs to move heavy stones and, to me, the wheel always seemed fairly obvious. But Bronowski points out that the great part of the invention of the wheel is not really the wheel, it is the axle. The axle is what allows the wheel to work. This significantly changed my perspective!

A Brilliant Presentation

Written and presented in the early 1970's in my opinion is one of the "must read books" for all persons. Its clarity, purpose and clear definition of mans progress over the millenia makes this book one of the best overviews of man and civilization's development. Bronowski presents with authority, humor and most importantly clarity. Concepts and impacts of major social and technical changes are dealt with in relevant chapters. For example Chapter 2, Harvest of the Seasons presents the importance of the evolution of emmer wheat and its consequences on the ability of man to move from hunter gatherer to stable agrarian society and from there evolve into a variety of technical innovations. This was written as the script to the TV series( and is best viewed as a TV documentary) but its direct presentation style keep the reader involved. My top "bucket list: book.
