So You Think You Know Teenagers

This book consists of 21 short stories by 21 students who attend an "alternative" high school. They open up about the problems they have faced in their short lives: gangs, drugs, abandonment, isolation, physical and verbal abuse by parents, suicides by siblings, parental divorces, teen pregnancies, bullying, and homelessness.

This book will test your emotions. You will be sad to learn about the difficulties these kids have faced. You will be angry at those who hurt them. But you will be cheered to find that these young people are finding their way with the help of Scriber High School in Edmonds, Washington. The book shows a triumph of resiliency of kids when they find the right environment.

The students did a public reading of their stories. Where did they find the courage to do that? They cried. The audience cried. You will, too.

True Experiences of Teens Today

Such an impassioned, blunt, descriptive, emotional upheaval of the brutal realities of life of teens today.

I thank God they have not all had to go through some of the horrors, but to read these numerous perspectives of experience can give parents, classmates, friends and teachers a chance sight into a very real outlook of teens and why they are people who have been disrupted by choices they have made and also circumstances outside of their control. What is important is that it happened and how it has affected the person. It deserves understanding and acknowledgment, but teaching us how to better love and understand them due to their choices, circumstances beyond their control, whether small and magnanimous problems, is what is crucial.

This book may be hard to read in one sitting, as it truly upset me these horrible things that have happened to good, young and impressionable people. But it does force us to re-examine people in situations we were perhaps judgmental about and adults can understand more thanks to this book.

Touching book - real eye opener

I received this book to review and didn't really know what to expect. Lucky for me it was a short book because I couldn't put it down until I finished. It is a book of stories written by young people about a turning point in their lives. It was very sad to read about what these children and those like them go through with abuse, gangs, drugs, loneliness or depression. Yet was inspiring to hear these stories of those who managed to either get the help they needed to make that change.
My son is a little younger than these children and may let him read it when he is a little older.

Possibly the most comprehensive book on the human condition

This is quite possibly the most comprehensive book ever written on the human condition, be it the dawn of the 20th century (when the book was written) or the dawn of the 21st century.
This book sadly fell out of print a few years ago, and I am so happy that it is once again available and able to enlighten a whole new generation. Edward Carpenter was a turn-of-the-century poet and philosopher who collected his works into this magnificent volume. He writes about democracy, not in the political sense, but in the social sense. Writing on equality, love, hope and the need to express one's sense of joy in a world that holds so much, Carpenter opens the mind and heart to the true issues that are fundamental to all people.
Carpenter's poetry and prose are inspirational and true to everyone's life, regardless of class, color or creed. He truly celebrates life the way it should be celebrated. A glorious tour-de-force, Towards Democracy is a book I would recommend to anyone and everyone.
I was given this book in 1991 by a friend as a going away (to college) gift. I was going through many changes in my life, and facing massive depression because of them. He gave me the book after turning to a passage that directly related to my situation, and I have read it no less than five times cover-to-cover. I believe that fate sent him to that book, and in turn, brought it into my life.
Any time I feel down-trodden or unable to focus on what is really important in my life, I read a little. It never fails to help. I have shared this book with friends, and they all think it is one of the most brilliant and eloquent books they've read.
Don't get me wrong, this is not a book centered on religion, and many of the essays are descriptions of places Carpenter's seen. However, it is his unique vision of the world, his wonderful prose and immense respect of life that make this a book that belongs in every library.

There are certain people and particular pieces of literature that belong to the fabric of man's truest nature. This book, like "Leaves Of Grass" and "Walden" and Emerson's essays, belongs in that category. This is one of those books that are for those quiet moments when the inner space within needs nourishment. Carpenter is the type of man I long to talk to. He understands the fundamentals of the human experience. He is very different than W.W. yet very similar. W.W.'s poetry is more to my liking but Carpenter's temperament and perspective makes W.W. more poignant and relevant. Very powerful lives and natures entangled in the cosmic dance of life. They compliment one another. This is a book to be sipped and savoured in the quiet moments at either the beginning or end of one's day.

About the Author

Brian L. Ott is Associate Professor of Media Studies in the Department of Communication at the University of Colorado Denver. He is the author of The Small Screen: How Television Equips Us to Live in the Information Age (Wiley Blackwell, 2007) and co-editor of It's Not TV: Watching HBO in the Post-Television Era (2008).

Robert L. Mack is a PhD candidate in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. His writing has appeared in The Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts and The Journal of GLBT Family Studies.

This is an excellent textbook, the best I have read in a while on media studies. I was put off at the beginning by the sequence of short introductory essays on Freud, McLuhan, pragmatism, etc., but after working through all the chapters I am actually impressed by the range of the authors' reach, and the quality of some of the introductions. It would be a good book to teach from, as each chapter is a different layer or approach that is very user-friendly. A very, very important element of this book is the fine presentation of the statistics on viewership and ownership, statistics that are hard to find in one place. That is what drew me to the book in the first place, and the rest was originally just a bonus. Another special aspect of this book is that it has very strong sections on feminism, queer theory, and various forms of eroticism as critical tools. The sections on fan fiction and prosumerism were excellent.

There could perhaps have been more discussion of how to "close read" a visual text -- some of the appendicized essays do some of that -- my experience is that students are simultaneously sophisticated about the analysis of content, and unskilled in the analysis of form and technical details.

The only serious drawback of the book is that it is relentlessly American -- although decent reference is made to the British school of cultural studies, virtually all the examples are American movies and TV. Foreign media hardly exist. On the other hand, the examples used are very good, and fairly up to date (e.g. Family Guy, Walking Dead, reality shows, etc.).

Another little bonus (speaking as toronto) was the discussion of Toronto's early role in critical media studies (Innis, McLuhan, Ong). The book doesn't mention the fact that one of the great supports for this work was the CBC, a public broadcaster that (in those days) had extraordinary creative moments. And Edmund Carpenter should have received a mention as the originator of several of McLuhan's notions of acoustic space.

I liked the Kindle version so much that I bought a text version for future reference (oh yes, and the references are terrific).

A very readable textbook

I assigned this fine book in a class for the first time this semester (Fall, 2014), and it has worked quite well. The authors are especially good at explaining complex theoretical orientations in the field of media studies. It's accessible and engaging, and not at all simplistic. A Superb Book On Analytical Dynamics

This is an excellent book on the fundamentals of Analytical Dynamics. It deals with the essentials of Lagrangian mechanics in an altogether new and imaginative way. It is a 'must read' for beginners as well as experts, for it contains a wealth of new information and new results. Though short (only about 250 pages), it sparkles with brilliance and promises to become, like Goldstein's book, a classic text in the field.
Far from a dry re-hash of material taken from other books, as is commonly the case with books on this subject, this book takes a truly novel and exciting tack--just like its title says. It explains the basic concepts in Analytical Dynamics in a new, thorough, yet simple, way. The material is extremely well-crafted and carefully presented in a systematic manner; the power of the new results provided by the authors is astounding, as illustrated by the numerous examples in the book.
The authors show their mastery of the subject by leading the reader on, with unusual clarity, into deeper and deeper realms of the subject with each successive chapter. The book provides amazing insights into Lagrangian mechanics, constrained motion, multi-body dynamics, Gauss's Principle, etc., along with an incredible economy of words, and a stunning level of simplicity.
The material in especially the later chapters that deals with elimination methods and the Gibbs-Appell equations, to the best of my knowledge, is all new. The problems at the end of each chapter appear to be carefully chosen and instructive for students. Each chaper ends with a section entitled "For Further Reading," that I found interesting. The format of the book is such that it could be easily used as a text for a course on the subject.
The authors have written a truly outstanding text that can be read and enjoyed by an advanced university junior or senior, a graduate student, or an expert in the field. It is one of the VERY FEW technical books that I have come across that I just could not put down, once I started reading it.
I heartily recommend this book to the science and engineering community.

A Short Review

I came across this book surfing the web. The customer reviews seemed excellent, so I bought it. Since I don't like long book reviews, I'll be brief.
My Opinion: The book is EXCELLENT! The authors know analytical dynamics inside-out, and that is why their explanations are so simple and aesthetic.
My Research: I was curious to know how this book came about . . . it seemed to come like out of the blue. So I did some research. The authors are active researchers. They have published numerous papers in the most prestigious journals over the last 2 decades, and they continue to present new research on the fundamentals of analytical dynamics. That explained a lot to me! Especially the high quality of the book.
Recommendation: Read it, and enjoy! Read it again, and enjoy some more!
About other reviews: I agree with the previous reviewers . . . this is a book that should be on the bookshelf of everyone interested in mechanics, students and researchers alike.

A New Classic in Analytical Dynamics

This short book is written with a style and clarity that can only come from individuals who understand analytical dynamics both deeply and well. The book is in many ways utterly brilliant. The authors take on perhaps the most difficult problem in analytical dynamics-- the problem of constrained motion that has been worked on by such individuals as H. Poincare-- and they provide a solution that is new, elegant, simple, and marvelous.
Though it starts from simple beginnings, from the very first chapter one realizes that this is a book of a very different caliber from those currently available on the subject. Almost imperceptibly, the authors lead the reader across a vast landscape in analytical dynamics. The topics are covered incrementally, and in excellent pedagogical order. Problems at the end of each chapter are well thought out. The authors' style is engaging, their explanations are remarkably clear, and their results simply amazing. The physical insights they provide are beautiful, novel, and new.
I consider this book to be a truly original contribution to the field of analytical dynamics; for, there is little in it that I have ever come across in any other book on the subject. Not only is its approach new, as its title says, but most of the results developed in it are also new-- something I would never have imagined finding in a mature field like mechanics.
There is little doubt that this book will have a lasting impact on the field of analytical dynamics. In eight short chapters it says more about the fundamentals of analytical dynamics than most other books that are three times its size. I believe that its uniqueness may well, in time, make it a classic.
I very strongly recommend this book to all students and researchers in the field. I plan to use it as a text for the course that I teach on the subject.

I Can`t Think Of A Better Spanish Book Than This One.

One of the first books I ever bought to learn spanish. This book was originally written in 1955 but has been updated, revised and expanded. It really does make spanish easy to learn but you must take the time to study the book at least an hour per day. The author`s method for teaching you Spanish is very effective and impressive even by today`s standards even though it was written in the 50s. If something is good, it`s good no matter when it was made. I have read and studied many, many spanish books in my quest to become fluent and this book is the first book I would recommend to any beginner or intermediate learner and even advanced spanish students will learn plenty of spanish grammer and vocabulary here. In fact, I recently bought myself a new copy and started studying it again. I wanted to refresh myself on the lessons contained herein and I find that I am being reminded of many words and expressions that I forgot about and I am learning lots of new spanish. That`s what inspired me to write a review and tell people about this most excellent book for starting your spanish education and working your way up to fluency.

I am disappointed with the author of this book

I am disappointed with the author of this book. First of all you should illustrates a South America flag and not a Spain flag in your book. Because our phonetic is totally different. Spanish language comes from Castilian and like always people want to devaluate the European Spanish culture. We have 29 letters in our alphabet (A,B,C,CH,D,E,F,G,H,I,J,K,L,LL,M,N,�,O,P,Q,R,S,T,U,V,W,X,Y,Z), each one have a different sounds. The author is using the same sound for the letter C, S and Z, big mistake. You are still using the same sound for B and V, another big mistake. Please these is so disrespectful for our culture. At least change book's cover and put a South American flag. Your cover is misleading people.

Font size has limits with the electronic version for kindle.

Text seems well planned (haven't gotten too far along yet!). I bought this for the kindle, so my review is on the electronic version of the book. The option to change font size does NOT work properly and if you make the font larger the display just runs out of sight. Changing the kindle to landscape helps a bit to get a larger view without each sentence running out of sight, but there are still limits to how big you can make the text. (Making the text larger is one of the best things about electronic formats - if your eyes are tired you can still read!) I was a bit disappointed in this, there does not seem to be any way to scroll over and see the rest of the text if you have enlarged the font (using kindle voyage). I have tried playing with options for margins and line spacing but nothing I have done allows the font to go beyond a certain size before it just cuts off the end of all the sentences of the page (instead of moving them down so you can continue reading).

About the Author
Richard J. Hanson has more than five decades of practical experience in the development of mathematical software. He has worked in academia, for the United States government, and for private software firms. He now has his own consulting business and is currently working on a new parallel version of the ARPACK eigenvalue package.

Tim Hopkins is the current algorithms editor for ACM Transactions on Mathematical Software and has four decades of experience writing and testing scientific application codes in Fortran. He worked as a lecturer in the School of Computer Science at the University of Kent for 35 years before retiring in 2010. He has been a member of IFIP Working Group 2.5 on Numerical Software since 2003 and is currently writing parallel simulation codes for Bergen Software Services International, using Fortran and MPI.

A must-read for those who want to understand modern Fortran

I've been seeing a lot of books come out with "Modern Fortran" in the title, which has given me a chuckle. As a former Fortran compiler developer, and current Fortran standards committee member and "evangelist" on behalf of my employer, I see a lot of programmers who learned Fortran back in the 80s and 70s (and even 60s) who need help understanding all that Fortran 2008, the most recent standard, brings to the table. While there are lots of books that are references, or that try to teach the entire language from scratch, there aren't many that take the approach that Hanson and Hopkins did with "Numerical Computing With Modern Fortran."

I've known Dr. Hanson professionally for a number of years, and he sent me a copy of the book as a professional courtesy. He didn't ask me to review it, but after reading it I am delighted to do so as I will be recommending it to my own customers. If you're not a mathematician, don't let the title scare you. While Hanson and Hopkins do use popular mathematical algorithms to illustrate how to use modern Fortran, the bulk of the book is aimed at bringing the FORTRAN IV or FORTRAN 77 programmer up to speed with Fortran 2008. Topics covered include free-form source, modules, generic procedures, object-oriented programming and recursion, all things completely absent from older versions of the language. These are presented in an incremental fashion, with lots of small examples that illustrate the benefits and proper usage of the new features. The tone is friendly and approachable, and it is chock full of advice I completely agree with.

Especially delightful were the extensive chapters on the IEEE floating point and C interoperability features introduced in Fortran 2003, and several chapters on parallelism including MPI, OpenMP and coarrays (a Fortran 2008 feature.) Unlike some books I have read, Numerical Computing with Modern Fortran isn't structured as a textbook, though there are a couple of "exercises" at the end of each section that serve to make you think about the implications of what was written earlier. Full source for the examples is provided at the publisher's web site for download. Do note that this is NOT a reference book and it does not cover all aspects of the language. There are quite a few other excellent books out there for that purpose.

I highly recommend this book for any Fortran programmer whose Fortran skills were learned many years ago. Fortran is still widely used in engineering and scientific applications, especially in what is called High Performance Computing or HPC and this book can help you make the most of what the language has to offer.
