Avin's companions—the warrior Ax, one-armed sorcerer Jocen, plucky owl Ulkia, drug-addled cheetah Summon the Wind and raccoon stand-up comic Onesso—all have their own reasons for accompanying him through the animal territories across the Bladebone Mountains. Their travels will take them from the highly regimented wolf cities, to the riches and luxury of the Equine Commonwealth, all the way to the vertiginous tunnels of the serpents' underground Net and across the waters of the Autonomous Dolphin Collective—to whatever unknown awaits them.

What neither Avin nor his companions yet understand is that the real force behind the Free Plains attack is neither canine nor feline, nor yet crocodile, insect, raptor, bear or shark. Far to the east, in the scorched wasteland known as The Barrens, lives the ragged clan that calls itself The Godless.

There, Avin will confront his brother, his companions and himself, and discover two truths: one that changes everything he understands about himself, and another that threatens the balance of the entire world.

For $2.99 it's hardly a gamble

I used to be a huge fantasy fan. Tolkien, Goodkind, Eddings etc. Slowly my appetite for it died. Perhaps I was choosing bad books, of perhaps fantasy went through a lull in quality, but I just wasn't doing it for me anymore. There was too much derivative garbage out there. I slowly moved toward literary fiction, and became shy of fantasy.

Then I heard David Maine was writing a fantasy novel. I always give authors that have previously entertained me a chance, regardless of genre (except "romance" please David never!) so long story short, I got an ARC of `Gamble of the Godless'.

From the first chapter I was hooked. The writing is fast and easy. The dialogue is reasonably realistic, and best part, no elves, orcs, giants or dragons to be found! Don't get me wrong, I love myth and folktales, and all the fantastical creatures out there, but the fantasy genre needs a little fresh blood, and here it is.

The book is full of action and adventure. Talking animals and their cultures are abundant. Magic is used in a way that makes sense, with rules and a certain amount of logic. One thing that I found the most interesting is how much humour is present. I found myself laughing often, but it's not funny in a Terry Pratchett way... in other words it's not a farce, or goofy.

The story is simple. It's a fish out of water story, which lends itself well to us, the readers, as we are also fish out of water in this word. The hero is on a quest, so there is a lot of adventurous stuff going on. It is also a bit of a buddy story, and I liked that. It gave the story a touch of humanity that is often missing in fantasy.

I do have one small complaint. I wanted more depth. I found the world David Maine created to be very interesting, and I wanted a little more detail. Not so much as to slow the story down , but a little more. So as far as complaints go, that's not too bad. I wanted more.

The Gamble of the Godless by David Maine follows the young man Avin as he travels a rather unique world. The races are not defined by skin color or the commonly seen human, dwarf, elf, etc, they are divided by animal species. Each species' language defined by their specific way of viewing life.

When an army is massacred not far from Avin's family farm he meets the lone survivor Ax. Even though Ax would have been his enemy if his army had not been wiped out Avin takes pity on him and gives him food and shelter. Learning that the Canine Kingdom is suspected of the attack Avin and Ax go to find out more from a nearby village. Finding out that the warring kingdoms of the humans are allying to get revenge against the canines they return to the farm with the intent of joining the army. Along the way the realize that not all is as it seems though Avin's brother has run off to join in the killing of the canines. Avin goes to bring his brother home while Ax is motivated by avenging all of his comrades.

In their travels through all the kingdoms they meet many interesting creatures including a human sorceress trained by snakes, a horse spy, a comedian raccoon, a snake sorcerer, an owl, a drug addicted cheetah, and many more animals from the various species.

I had a lot of fun reading this book with it's unique rules for interaction between the races. The cultural differences are much more pronounced than is normally found in fantasy novels which led to some interesting difficulties for the group as they traveled through the various regions. I did find the canines method of speaking to be kind of annoying at times, but the group was not really around them for any great amount of time so that is a minor thing. Avin was a well written young man out seeing the world for the first time. He often had no idea what was going on or how to act/react in the situations they found themselves in, but proved to be a quick learner. Avin also seemed to have a very good heart which inspired loyalty from the various species in the group.

Overall this was a fun read and I am very much looking forward to the next chapter in the story.

Great Book!

The Gamble of the Godless is a fantasy adventure book that follows the travels of Avin del Bors who is a young boy trapped in a warring and confused world. As things begin to heat up Avin's bother heads off to fight in an unprecedented and completely misunderstood war and Avin sets out to prevent the war and protect his brother. Along the way he adds warriors, sorcerers, and creature friends who aid him on his quest throughout the realm. What makes this book so unique? First off the story of a young person travelling around the countryside with a group of diverse people attempting to do something or prevent something else is not a new idea. It has really never been a new idea but David Maine has put something together here that is absolutely a new spin on this idea. The animals that are incorporated into the group speak in different ways and have special abilities in some cases. His characters are unique and while reading it is really easy to lose yourself into the story of each character. The groups adventure through each animal homeland is stunning and exciting; especially the canine world. The interactions between the different races (both human and animal) provides a glimpse into the animal world in a way that has not been done before. This provides for unique difficulties for the group as they travel. The uniqueness of the characters is what really stood out to me. I could not help but love each character and to hope that they would not lose a companion in the end. This is a journey that you take with Avin and his companions. You will laugh, cry, feel pain, laugh a bit more, and be frustrated with them. It is an emotional roller coaster; just like a good fantasy novel should be. You will grow attached to the characters and lose yourself within the story. I really enjoyed this read. If you are fantasy reader then this is a must read for you. I look forward to the next chapter of the story and more epic adventures from David Maine. The Gamble of the Godless is a fantastic book that should rank high within the fantasy world for a long time to come.

About the Author
Leonard R. Johnson received a Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Michigan and then trained with Dr. Morton I. Grossman at UCLA. He spent 17 years as a Professor of Physiology at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston before moving to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center as the Thomas A. Gerwin Professor and Chairman of the Department of Physiology. He is the author or coauthor of over 250 papers on gastrointestinal physiology and holds an NIH MERIT Award. Currently he is the Vice Chancellor for Research at Tennessee.

concise yet detailed!

this is a great book for understanding the GI tract and all processes involved in the organ system's function - it goes into detail, but the chronological order and organised format of the book makes it easy to follow.

Jesus, Truth, and Evidence

"Why don't the names of Buddha, Mohammed, Confucius offend people? The reason is that these others didn't claim to be God, but Jesus did," Josh McDowell presses (with son Sean McDowell). McDowell notes: "Jesus had various credentials to support His claims to being Messiah, God's son. One credential often overlooked, one of the most profound, is the fulfillment of prophecy in His life.

"And beginning with Moses and with all the prophets He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures" (Luke 24:27).

"In the Old Testament there are sixty major messianic prophecies and approximately 270 ramifications that were fulfilled in one person, Jesus Christ. It is helpful to look at all these predictions fulfilled in Christ as His "address." You've probably never realized how important the details of you r name and address are -and yet these details set you apart from the five billion other people who also inhabit this planet."
He adds: "With even greater detail, God wrote an address in history to single out His Son, the Messiah, the Savior of mankind, from anyone who has ever lived in history -past, present, or future. The specifics of this address can be found in the Old Testament, a document written over a period of a thousand years, which contains more than three hundred references to His coming. Using the science of probability, we find the chances of just forty-eight of these prophecies being fulfilled in one person to be right at one in 10157 (a one followed by 157 zeros!)."

Additionally: "The task of matching up God's address with one man is further complicated by the fact that all the prophecies of the Messiah were made at least 400 years before He was to appear. Some might disagree and say that these prophecies were written down after the time of Christ and fabricated to coincide with His life. This might sound feasible until you realize that the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Hebrew Old Testament, was translated around 150-200 B.C. This Greek translation shows that there was at least a two-hundred-year gap between the prophecies being recorded and their fulfillment in Christ. Certainly God was writing an address in history that only the Messiah could fulfill. Approximately forty major claims to be the Jewish Messiah have been made by men. Only one-Jesus Christ-appealed to fulfilled prophecy to substantiate His claims, and only His credentials back up those claims."
And "Isaiah 7:14 adds that this man will be born of a virgin -a natural birth of unnatural conception, a criterion beyond human planning and control. Several prophecies recorded in Isaiah and the psalms describe the social climate and response that God's man will encounter: His own people, the Jews, will reject Him and the Gentiles will believe in Him (Isaiah 8:14; 28:16; 49:6; 50:6; 52:53; 60:3; Psalms 22:7,8; 118:22). There will be a forerunner for Him (Isaiah 40:3; Malachi 3:1), a voice in the wilderness, one preparing the way before the Lord, a John the Baptist."
"Notice, too, the seven ramifications of a prophecy (Zechariah 11:11-13; cf. Psalm 41, Jeremiah 32:6-15, and Matthew 27:3-10) that narrows the drama down even further. Here God indicates the Messiah will be (1) betrayed, (2) by a friend, (3) for thirty pieces, (4) of silver, that will be (5) cast onto the floor, (6) of the Temple, and (7) used to buy a potter's field. In Micah 5:2 God eliminated all the cities of the world and selected Bethlehem, with a population of less than a thousand, as the Messiah's birthplace."

Dr. McDowell continues: "Then through a series of prophecies He even defined the time sequence that would set His man apart. For example, Malachi 3:1 and four other Old Testament verses (Psalm 118:26; Daniel 9:26; Zechariah 11:13; Haggai 2:7-9) require the Messiah to come while the Temple of Jerusalem is still standing. This is of great significance when we realize that the Temple was destroyed in A.D. 70 and has not since been rebuilt. The precise lineage; the place, time, and manner of birth; people's reactions; the betrayal; the manner of death. These are just a fraction of the hundreds of details that made up the address to identify God's Son, the Messiah, the Savior of the world."

The author quotes Peter W. Stoner:
"The manuscript for Science Speaks has been carefully reviewed by a committee of the American Scientific Affiliation members and by the Executive Council of the same group and has been found, in general, to be dependable and accurate in regard to the scientific material presented. The mathematical analysis included is based upon principles of probability which are thoroughly sound, and Professor Stoner has applied these principles in a proper and convincing way."

McDowell comments: "The following probabilities are taken from that book to show that coincidence is ruled out by the science of probability. Stoner says that by using the modern science of probability in reference to just eight prophecies, `we find that the chance that any man might have lived down to the present time and fulfilled all eight prophecies is 1 in 1017.' That would be 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000."

About the Author
Aircraft was Roger Williams' first love, and he joined the de Havilland Aircraft Company where he quickly added motorcars to his list of prime interests. Just what I needed

This book has a virtual treasure trove of information in it about putting a Buick-Olds-Pontiac-Rover aluminum V8 in an MGB. For example, it doesn't just say "You will need a bracket to hold some particular thing," it provides a drawing of the bracket you will need to make. The book is out of print and somewhat out of date as far as suppliers are concerned but it is a real gold mine otherwise.

A bit pessimistic

A good book, with loads of detail information, but a reader will likely decide not to do the conversion after reading about all the customization and banging and chopping that, according to this book, must be performed.
From those I've talked to it's really not that bad. So use the book as a guide and don't let him talk you out of making the conversion.

With a quarter-century of culinary study and travel under his belt, this professor–cum–Indian food scholar offers up a mammoth work that encompasses every region of the country and provides 1,000 recipes. Fifteen pages of the introduction are given over to the 10 major culinary food locales of India, and it makes for an enlightening read. We learn, for instance, that the cuisine of Kashmir is influenced by central Asia and Tibet, while Bengal is big on sweetmeats and fish curries. Nicely labeled color photos adorn each of the nine food chapters, highlighting various snacks, entrees, breads, and desserts. However, the presentation of the recipes is another matter. Comprehensive to a fault, but with no commentary and all the welcoming charm of an auto parts catalogue, most are presented two to a page with boilerplate listings of origin, cooking time, ingredient list, and basic directions. For fanatics, some dishes require more than two dozen ingredients, such as the chicken pulao made with ghee and full of onions and chilis. Simpler options run the gamut from lamb in milk sauce to fried spicy carrots. A glossary and brief resource directory are much welcomed, and a short chapter of signature dishes from 11 Indian guest chefs from around the world provides a nice coda to the work. (Nov.)

About the Author
Pushpesh Pant was born in Nainital, northen India, and is now a professor at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. A regular recipe columnist and author of many cookbooks in India, he has spent two decades collecting authentic family recipes from all over the subcontinent, which have been carefully edited, tested and collated to produce a remarkable collection documenting the rich diversity of Indian cuisine.

In Desperate Need of a Second Edition

Phaidon should be ashamed of releasing this book in its current state (especially proclaiming "Quality Assurance" on the cover). Although, as other reviewers have pointed out, this book is beautifully designed, it is so poorly edited and indexed that each time I pick it up I encounter a new glaring error. Problems include:
- Recipes are printed twice, one after the other, e.g. Mirchi ka Salan (p. 319 & 320) and Matar Paneer (p. 315 & 316)
- Recipes do not appear in the index, e.g. Keeme ke Samose / Lamb Samosas (p. 209)
- Recipes are not indexed intelligently. Most types of dishes are not listed together in the index, for example you cannot look up "samosa" or "kebab" in the index and see a list of the different recipes for that type of dish, you will find only the recipes that begin with that word, e.g. Kebab Cooked on a Stone is listed under "kebab" but not Roasted Lamb Kebabs. In an 800 page book with 1000 recipes where the index is the only way to find recipes (there is no table of contents for each section) the terrible indexing job is unforgivable.

In addition, the author has made several mistakes that nearly sabotage what is obviously a labor of love and the product of a tremendous amount of research. First of all, the recipes are poorly written and have many oddities and omissions. Pigeon Peas in Rice Konji (p. 542) has no rice mentioned anywhere. As another reviewer pointed out, the recipe for Mirchi ka Salan / Stuffed Green Chillies is comically flawed: the chillies are never stuffed. This is even more egregious given that this recipe is pictured and it would be impossible to follow the recipe as is and produce something vaguely resembling the photo. It feels like many of the recipes were not tested and revised, but simply reprinted in whatever form they were collected.

Another example is the recipe for Chapati (p. 623), the most basic of all Indian breads. All the other recipes in the book list the Origin, Preparation Time, Cooking Time and how many it serves/makes, but for some reason that information is missing here. It never says how many chapatis the recipe makes, simply telling you to "divide the dough into equal pieces." For anyone versed in Indian food, another recipe for chapatis is hardly necessary, but this is unacceptable for a book that says "The Only Book on Indian Food You'll Ever Need" on the cover.

Also, there is absolutely no descriptive text for any of the recipes, they are simply lists of ingredients and terse descriptions of the method of preparation. While this is generally not a major problem, one would need to have traveled and eaten extensively throughout India to have sampled all the dishes presented in this book, and given this breadth and variety, even a short description of the desired consistency, appearance, and taste of the final dish would be very welcome. The photos do help, but only a small percentage of recipes are pictured.

Finally, the author dogmatically refuses to give amounts for salt (there are a couple of exceptions). For many dishes, such as dals, this only mildly annoying -- you can taste as you go and easily adjust them before serving. It becomes very irritating with dishes involving dough, raw meat, and especially pickles, in which the salt plays a key role as preservative and where the flavor changes dramatically as it ages, so what might have tasted too salty to begin with is actually the necessary amount of salt for proper curing of the pickle. It becomes comical in recipes such as Namkin Lassi / Salty Yogurt Shake (p. 719) to say only "salt" and not give some idea of how salty it should be. It is made more absurd by the fact that the author so carefully provides gram, ounce, and volume measurements for other ingredients -- which is very much appreciated -- but doesn't even give a vague suggestion on the amount of salt.

All that said, there is certainly a wealth of marvelous looking recipes here, and I have made several that have turned out delicious. This was only possible, however, because I have been seriously cooking Indian food for many years -- this book is absolutely not for the novice. In its current state I can only half-heartedly recommend it to experienced cooks. I truly hope that the author and publisher will produce a second edition that does justice to the potential that is obviously present in this collection of recipes.

The best encyclopedic collection on Indian cooking

As an avid collector of Indian cookbooks in particular, I have rarely come across a collection that is encyclopedic, rigorous in sticking to the classic recipes as well as meticulous about pinpointing their regional origins. This book manages to do it all. I can't speak much about the author, as the traditional "about the author" section seems to be missing in this book, save for a 2-page color photo spread.

That said, the design, the weight, the color coding and the sparse and accurate descriptions are generally a pleasure. For the novice new to Indian cooking, you will find a good overview of the various regions, but once you dive into the actual recipes themselves, there isn't much guidance on the nuances of the techniques, other than the standard description of the method. One other pet peeve is that the author completely sidesteps the tough issue of how much salt to add to the dishes (with just a terse mention of "salt", and not even the "salt to taste" that seems to be the standard cop-out of Indian cookbooks)

The beauty of the book, and the reasons for the 5-star rating are:
1) The only book that thoroughly and meticulously covers the cuisine from every region of India, in one place
2) Has over a 1000 recipes
3) Based on my initial perusal, generally tries to stick to the original / "classic" way of preparing the dish, without trying to be to too cute about dumbing the recipes down for non Indian audiences
4) Is generally accurate about ingredients, cook and prep time, and cooking method, that is rare to find in books authored by Indians living and writing in India (at least in my experience)
5) Has excellent pictures, though not for every recipe
6) Is extremely lightweight and very cleverly designed to imitate a commonplace bag of Basmati rice (this probably weighed more than it should have, pun not intended, in predisposing me favorably towards the book)

All in all, a little pricey, but in my opinion, your only shot at getting an authentic and fairly accurate comprehensive collection of Indian recipes. I'm very happy to add this to my collection.

Must have book for Indian food enthusiasts

I had heard about this book on chowhound.com and was very excited about it because I love Pushpesh Pant's food oriented work. I own another of his books, food Path: Grand Trunk Road from Kabul to Kolkota, which I love and have cooked from a lot. India: The Cookbook is excellent. The recipes are very authentic, homemade type stuff, and they look very good. I love it and can't wait to try out a few recipes. I am so sick of books which claim to be real-deal Indian cooking but the recipes are very restaurantish and not really what Indian food is like in people's homes, or books which claim to represent Indian cuisine, but it is clear that the recipes are very specific to how dishes are made in the author's region, yet this is never mentioned. The only way to really learn the myriad of Indian cuisines is by understanding regionality, and differences in cuisine within regions based on ethnolinguistic or religious community. India: The Cookbook doesn't really delve into ethnicity/religion in cuisine much, though is occasionally mentioned. But India: The Cookbook contains many, many recipes from all of India's major regions. Among the specific regions included in the book are Jammu-Kashmir, Punjab, Delhi, Awadh, Coastal (Pant lumps together the Western Coast states, occasionally specifying which), Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad, Bengal, and a few others.

I am not Asian, but my husband's family is from Pakistan (originally from Northern India), so getting good, authentic recipes is very important to me, as I cook South Asian cuisine at least a few times each week and like to cook a large range of dishes rather than eating the same thing all of the time. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn Pakistani recipes as well, since the Northern cuisine recipes of India: The Cookbook's often overlap with Pakistani recipes due to the obvious historical and cultural connections. As a matter of fact, my husband's parents hail from Delhi area and Awadh (Lucknow), and the recipes in the book are pretty much just like what is made in my inlaw's home. This is really extra special for a book, because often North Indian Muslim cuisine is represented in cookbooks as fakey creamy Mughlai-inspired recipes that look nothing like what is actually made by the living inheritors of Mughal and Nawaabi cooking traditions. Also, many books only give fancy meaty Awadhi type recipes, but the region has gorgeous daily vegetable and lentil dishes, too, and these are included in this cookbook.

I am only superficially familiar with South Indian cooking, but I am very pleased to get to know more Southern recipes from India: The Cookbook, which has a large number of Tamil recipes, as well as recipes from other Southern states. Often, Indian cookbooks throw in a few Southern recipes for good measure, but India: The Cookbook is much more balanced in its representation of Southern cuisines, although it is heavily focused on Tamil dishes. I am also pleased to see many Hyderabadi dishes, since this is a favorite cuisine of mine.

There are a couple of negative points to this book. For one, the paper is very thin, it feels like it doesn't have the highest quality printing or paper. That is a flaw of the publishing house, I suppose. India: The Cookbook has a glossary of ingredients with good descriptions, but to really be considered THE COOKBOOK, one must have pictures of the ingredients! There are no pics of ingredients! That is a major flaw. I know Indian cooking very well and am fluent in Urdu/Hindi, so I know what many ingredients are, but what about a neophyte Indian cook? Some of the ingredients are new to me (like Cambodge petals???) and I will have to use Google to assist me. Also, I prefer when books give the names in Indian languages next to the English name so I can be sure I know what the item is...instead, in India:The Cookbook some items are named in English, others in Hindi, and others in Tamil if they are for South Indian ingredients. That is the biggest flaw of the book, the glossary of ingredients. That can be gotten around if you already know a bit of Indian cooking, or if you are willing to use other resources for ingredients you don't know. If this book is ever updated, to really be a comprehensive tool to for Indian cooking, there must be pictures of ingredients in the ingredients glossary. This is not a book for beginners for this reason.

The recipes are easy to follow and given simply. One could complain that some of the recipes have a very long list of ingredients, but that is truthfully how a lot of Indian food is made, there is no getting around that. The introduction is very simple, and contains a bit of info on each major region. The book's worth is in its diverse recipes. There isn't in deep background given for each region, or thorough explanation about the cuisines.

The book has gorgeous pictures, though only for a selective number of recipes. I wouldn't recommend this book as an introduction to Indian cooking for a newbie. But it is definitely a must have to anyone committed to learning more about Indian cooking, which is something that I am always up for. You will not find another book with such a diverse collection of authentic Indian recipes.

Dr. Burk Dehority's manual for Classification and Morphology of Rumen Ciliate Protozoa is a must for any student of Rumen Microbiology. It compares nicely to many of the wildlife and outdoor guides leading the observer step by step to a definite identification of rumen ciliate protozoa to a species level. This manual is comprehensive, detailed and easy to use. Dr. Dehority's attention to detail and his ability to focus on important features of the ciliates show the perfect union of an artist and scientist. His Procedures section at the end of the book provide the student with all the "recipes" needed to make some discoveries of their own.
