Just What You Need

Between the simplified cartoon anatomy books, popular today, and the detailed treatments inspired by medical textbooks, is this fine work. This book is built from the ground up for artists. By focusing on surface anatomy, showing its relation to underlying muscle and bone structure, and then presenting it all with a multitude of useful and expertly done drawings, Sheppard has produced what may be the finest anatomical artist reference.

Most professional artists recommend Bridgeman's works. I don't doubt the usefulness of Bridgeman to a true working professional, but for me, and maybe other amateurs, the concepts in Bridgeman never seem to reveal themselves. Sheppard will be useful the first time you open the book and will certainly clear much of the confusion in figure drawing.

An essential book for your figure drawing library

THIS BOOK IS A "MUST HAVE". It is not the only drawing book that you need in your personal library, but it is one of the most essential.

The book includes about seventy well-drawn male and female nude drawings, grouped by type of pose (standing, crouching, twisting, etc.). Each of the seventy poses is drawn three times --
(1) as an annotated finished drawing,
(2) as an annotated (identically sized) skeleton in the same pose, and
(3) as an annotated (identically sized) muscle diagram in the same pose.

The anatomy is at a level of detail designed for the figure-drawing artist, not for the medical illustrator. As such, only those muscles and bones that are significant to a particular pose are labeled, and are described with simplified nomenclature.

I remember complaining to my instructor that I could discern the rib cage in our male model, but not in this rounded-back posed female model. This book is the ideal reference for seeing the support infrastructure in such situations.

Although there are many approaches to figure drawing, understanding the effects that underlying anatomical infrastructure have on surface anatomy is essential to realistic drawing. In addition to this book, you should also have other books in your figure drawing library, that cover croquis, circles & guidelines, tonal masses, planes, gestures, cylinders, lighting, proportions, contours, and other techniques. But Joseph Sheppard's "Drawing the Living Figure" will be your primary anatomical reference.

For Seventh Day Adventists, not Evangelical Christians

This book is specifically for Seventh Day Adventists, not Evangelical Christians. Unless you are interested in starting a program at an SDA church based on their writings, which include church doctrine not common to many Christians, you will be dissatisfied, as I was. I wish that it had been marked accurately.

If you are a Seventh Day Adventist, you will be quite pleased with the book. It used Ellen White quotes, and shows you how to evangelize non-SDA people using health evangelism.

Worth every cent

The author has received a bit of negative feedback for his book as being very SDA-oriented. Poor insight from the reviewers. The facts are these: Seventh-day Adventists have by far been the most health-promoting church on the planet. They have alot to share, even if the book does use a bit of church lingo. Buy the book. Its philosophy won't disappoint you.

J. Russell Madray is president of The Madray Group, Inc., which specializes in knowledge transfer. Through a combination of technical writing, training, and targeted consulting, The Madray Group helps businesses, accounting firms, and other organizations understand and implement technical accounting and auditing issues. Mr. Madray has more than 20 years of professional experience, including ten years in public practice. He also serves as a senior lecturer at Clemson University's School of Accountancy and Legal Studies. He is the author of numerous publications and articles on accounting and auditing topics, including many of the AICPA's Audit Risk Alert series. In addition, he speaks to hundreds of groups each year on accounting and auditing topics and has made presentations in more than 40 states. Mr. Madray is a certified public accountant, a certified internal auditor, a certified management accountant, and a certified financial manager. He is a past member of the AICPA's Accounting and Review Services Committee and a current member of the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Association of CPAs. Mr. Madray earned a B.S. in Accounting from Clemson University in 1986 and a Master of Professional Accountancy from Clemson University in 1988.

Very nice!

Love it! Love the light shading in some of the outlines. Coloring comes out nicer that way.
Pages are not overcrowded with pictures or text which makes for a nicer design altogether compared to other human anatomy coloring books. No, this is not my first A&P coloring book. But, it's the first one I enjoy both visually as well as educationally.

The ultimate "encyclopedia" of self help.

I have to admit that I'm a fan of Tal Ben Shahar. His first two books plus his Positive Psychology training course have positively influenced my life.

He even influenced my MBA research orientation when I choose the "Sense of Coherence" , a coping model that Tal advocates, as the core of my MBA Leadership research thesis , which made it initially controversial to my school (dealing with psychology rather than pure business) . Yet it was a great academic experience with a lot of contribution to my resilience.

When this book came out and I passed through its table of content, I didn't expect much more than a "me too" version of his compilation book "Even Happier".

To my surprise, this book turns out to be the best & most practical work for Tal!

Not only that the format of the book is easily accessed through the "lessons" presentation style that can be chosen by the reader according to situational needs, but also the book is written in a style that combines scientific perspectives with inspirational stories & creative metaphors in a literary style.

On the other hand, I find at least 30% of the psychological interventions & advises in the book as novel & never presented before by Tal: Lessons like Loving-kindness meditation, deceptive brain messages, listening to silence and many more, were indeed A-ha moments to me.

The greatest lesson I learned was this: It seems that over- analysis of oneself through dealing with self help books can be a source of misery rather than happiness, real happiness comes from focusing outward rather than onward. That was a real sound advice to me , as a self-help addict reader.

By the end of the book, I realized that Tal has covered almost everything in the realm of the empirically tested self help & P.P techniques.

That's why now I choose to call this book the "encyclopedia" of self help.

The only downside of this book is that it has too much of "good things" that can be sometimes overwhelming. To benefit from the book, I had to go picky & choose what sounds more influential to my life.

But yes, Tal has done it again.

A distillation of psych 1504

I have watched the entire lecture series from psych 1504 on you tube. This short, easily read book distills the wisdom of those lectures into a great source of strength and happiness that can be referred to as often as one likes and whenever needed to bring about a positive attitude adjustment.

permission to be human,learn to fail, and throw the knapsack over the wall are some of my favorites along with the upward spiral of appreciation and gratitude.

Tal, I hope you put together the online masters degree in positive psychology. I have already read many of the books you referenced in class and welcome the opportunity to learn more. I am almost sixty years old, but can still learn new tricks.

I'm the same way. You've probably heard people say that they wrote a particular book because it was the kind of book they wanted to read; in this case, that's exactly what happened.�
Throughout the show's seven-year run, I stalked Amazon and my local bookstores, always hoping that someone would publish a book about this, one of my favorite shows of all time. By 2008, a year after the last episode had aired, I realized that nobody was going to write one, which is when I approached my publisher about the prospect of writing one of my own. Thankfully, the head of BearManor Media is one of those souls who realizes just how important some television shows can be to people.�After nearly three years, 480 pages, and more than 40 interviews with the cast and crew of Gilmore Girls, I've come to appreciate just how unique this series, and the people who worked so tirelessly behind it, really are. About the Author
A.S. Berman is a longtime Gilmore Girls fan, and author of The New Horror Handbook and 30 Years of British Television. He and his wife (and Gilmore Girls Companion art director) Pamela share a house with a cat named after Max Medina, though CatKirk now seems more suitable. (Max, no!) Berman is currently working on Soap! The Inside Story of the Sitcom that Broke All the Rules.

A treasure trove of details

Bottom line is that big fans of the show will absolutely love this book. Even moderate fans of the show should appreciate the beginning of the book (a forward by Edward Hermann - Richard Gilmore - and the backstory of how the show came into being) and the After Gilmore chapter (which summarizes the subsequent three years for all of the key people). Big fans of the series will go gaga over the amazing amount of detail that forms the bulk of the book.

For each episode, there is:
* a synopsis
* Ginchy!, a collection of particularly heart-warming moments
* Notes
* Amen, sister friend! (memorable dialogs)

There are also amusing sections where appropriate such as:
* Kirk-of-all-trades
* You've entered Emilyland
* Emily's maid du jour
* Today's celebration

In addition to all that, there are extensive behind the scenes notes, biographical information on many of the actors and production people, and more. Besides being fun to read, it helped reinforce the dedication to quality that everyone had. When you watch the show, the attention to detail is quite evident, but the book gives the details that describe what it was really like.

While the book would have been better if the principles (Amy Sherman-Palladino, Lauren Graham, and Alexis Bledel) would have been interviewed, the reality is that it wasn't going to happen.

Kudos to the author for going through the enormous effort required to get all of this information together in one place.

Great read

I was waiting for someone to review this book before I bought it just to be sure it was a good read.But since no one did, I HAD to have it. I really enjoyed this book and it made me go back and rewatch many episodes to see some of the details that the author pointed out. At times I could not put this book down even if it was majority a book about the episodes. I would have loved to have more of the main characters interviewed but overall, this was a GREAT book that puts the show in a different light for me. I respect the author's opinion and enjoyed some of the backround details of the show.

A must for fans!

If anyone is considering it, but not sure if it's worth it: it totally is. There are just so many behind-the-scenes tidbits about everyone and everything. Edward Hermann apparently took Alexis under his wing at the beginning of the series and watched out of her: her would tell the producers, etc., when she was being burnt out (she, a novice and shy, wasn't comfortable speaking up for that). If you watch the early episodes and notice how much Lorelai puts her arm around Rory, it's Lauren guiding Alexis to her mark. Kelly Bishop risked jinxing herself by telling the people at the audition what a great script it was. Keiko kept sneakers and a sweater from her Lane wardrobe; Todd Lowe swiped some Hep Alien swag. This book is a must-have for anyone that is or ever was a GG fan.

About the Author
Peter G�ssel runs an agency for museum and exhibition design. For TASCHEN he published monographs on Julius Shulman, R.M. Schindler, John Lautner and Richard Neutra as well as several titles in the Basic Architecture Series.

Barbara Lamprecht writes on and teaches architectural history, concentrating on Modernism, and practices architecture, specializing in sustainability and small spaces. She contributes to Dwell, The Architectural Review, Architecture, Architectural Record and Fine Homebuilding.

A resident of Los Angeles since 1920, Julius Shulman documented modernist architecture in Southern California and across the globe for nearly eight decades. His images of Pierre Koenig's Case Study House No. 22 (1960) in Los Angeles and Richard J. Neutra's Kaufmann House (1947) in Palm Springs are among the most recognizable and iconic architectural photographs of the 20th century. Shulman's interest in photography developed into a career when he photographed Neutra's Kun Residence in Los Angeles with his Kodak Vestpocket camera in 1936. Neutra admired young Shulman's images and continued to commission his work. Other leading architects of the time followed suit, as did hundreds of magazines, newspapers, and book publishers. Shulman's numerous awards include the Architectural Photography Medal from the American Institute of Architects (1969), a lifetime achievement award from the International Center of Photography in New York (1998), and honorary doctorates from various academic institutions. He died on July 15, 2009 at the age of 98.

Exquisite architecture

When I was a teenager I would look around my local library (Baldwin Public Library in Birmingham, MI) for interesting books. I happened to stumble upon a book about architecture by Richard Neutra. I checked it out and the prose and pictures totally blew my mind. He made points about subjects like relative room size of adjacent rooms and the organic nature of great architecture that I still think about, 30 years later.

These works (the architecture) are simply brilliant. There are many many wonderful architects, but for me there will always be one favorite: Richard Neutra.

This is an exquisite book, beautifully printed. The photos are lushly presented.

Other books are going to get more clever or well written reviews from me, but this one will have to suffer my gushing, because in architecture and life, you never get over your first love.

Large & Unweildy but substantively excellent

This book is huge and heavy and hard to hold, but is the ultimate collection of photos (mostly B/W) and descriptions of Neutra and his work. It's written in 3 languages, which means that a lot of the volume of the book (2/3 of the text) is wasted space, though the book is easily 50% photos. A detailed (roughly 15% of the book) nontechinical history, light bio, and analysis is included at the beginning, which is well written for a mass audience (ie, you dont need to be an architect to understand it). There is little to criticize. If you are reading the reviews for this book, that means you are looking for a book on Neutra specifically, and you aren't going to do much better than this.

Great coverage, not pleased with the Taschen layout

This book does a nice job laying out Neutra's houses over the years. The pictures could have been a little bigger, but I am not going to pick on that point. It is pretty complete in its breadth.
What gets this volume only a 4 star review is the fact that Taschen chose to save money and instead of putting out three different volumes, (one English , one German, one French), they chose to put all three together in one volume!
So what you have is a history which could have probably fit into half the amount of pages (and this is a monster volume) but instead is the size it is largely because there are 3 different accompanying texts for each and every building and house in the book. So imagine having a nice picture of one of Neutra's houses and then an English text describing it and then on the following page, two more texts in each accompanying language. This happens throughout the book and because of it I have taken out a star.
I wish they would have pointed out this fact before I bought it.
On the other hand, if you don't have this book and are a Neutra fan, you should probably buy it.
