At a time when writing skills have virtually disappeared, what can be done? If only people learned the principles of verbal correctness, the essential rules, wouldn't good prose simply fall into place? Thomas and Turner say no. Attending to rules of grammar, sense, and sentence structure will no more lead to effective prose than knowing the mechanics of a golf swing will lead to a hole-in-one. Furthermore, ten-step programs to better writing exacerbate the problem by failing to recognize, as Thomas and Turner point out, that there are many styles with different standards.

The book is divided into four parts. The first, "Principles of Classic Style," defines the style and contrasts it with a number of others. "The Museum" is a guided tour through examples of writing, both exquisite and execrable. "The Studio," new to this edition, presents a series of structured exercises. Finally, "Further Readings in Classic Prose" offers a list of additional examples drawn from a range of times, places, and subjects. Stylistically the Best

Clear and Simple as the Truth has influenced me more than has any other book on any subject. I checked it out of the library after reading a positive review by Denis Dutton. The first sentence was so striking, I can still quote it from memory: "The teaching of writing in America is almost entirely controlled by the view that teaching writing is teaching verbal skills, from the placing of commas to the ordering of paragraphs." I had experienced this sort of teaching firsthand, and so it was just as if I was in the model scene, with the authors pointing me toward a fact that I could instantly recognize as true.

At the time, I had just declared my English major at the University of Washington and was taking a course on introductory writing in the humanities, as we were required to. We learned how to use commas, colons, and semi-colons, and we learned more abstract things, like what it is that we call "close reading." But there was nothing even close to what these authors describe in the first dozen or so pages of Clear and Simple. No discussion of writing, at an abstract level, was performed at all. It sufficed, in their minds, that I knew what a caesura was, not to mention the pathetic fallacy, ekphrasis, and a host of other terms that help you sound like an English professor.

Their way of approaching style--by thinking about its conceptual stands--is not like anything else I have seen. I found the section about styles other than classic style--reflexive, plain, etc--to be perhaps the most eye-opening section. My literary interest lies almost solely in poetry--I read very few works of prose--and so I began thinking about how I could figure out what the conceptual stands were of the poets I read. Does Mark Strand's "Man and Camel" represent truth as knowable? Does language mirror thought in Stevens' "The Man with the Blue Guitar"? These are not questions I have an easy time answering, and I usually succeed only in confusing myself. But I find the questions interesting to ponder nonetheless, and the occasional conclusion reached can be quite gratifying.

If you pay attention to what the authors are saying, your prose style will dramatically improve. Your writing will seem less muddled, less defensive, and more focused than it did before. And the same ideas that help you write better will also help you understand the texts you read at a greater depth.

Updating a Classic

This is an updated edition of the brilliant "classic" by Turner and Thomas on the classic style, including new material not included in the original volume. The authors have composed their work in the classic style that they describe, a way of positing relations between the writer, the reader, and the truth. They do not explicitly state that the classic style is the only possible way to write well, but they do helpfully distinguish between this and other modes of prose. Reading this book has improved my writing (even though I already considered myself a good writer) by allowing me to clarify my own desired stance toward the reader. It is not a traditional handbook or manual or style, so those who approach it in that spirit might be disappointed. What they find, though, will ultimately be even more valuable than such a manual.

One can grasp and learn a lucid artifice

When a linguist recommends a book on writing, it is a few clicks to read a piece of a brief for the "classic style," where you watch over the shoulder of an author and see what she or he does, as if you are walking in a field with a friend experienced in birdwatching who is happy to point out the kite flying overhead or the sound of a sandhill crane. This style is rooted in our experience with "joint attention" on what we can sense in front of us and is a template for presenting perspectives on everything from the concrete to the abstract.

The book begins with an essay defining the classic style and setting it apart from other styles of writing, and it includes both a gallery of curated examples as well as a set of exercises to help you develop the classic style. The book does not argue with the reader. It presents the classic style as a convention of communication, a lucid artifice that takes the common experience of informal conversation about an observable phenomenon as the model for writing.

It traces the sources of disestablishment in the colonial experience, offers exegetical commentary on the relevant discussion at the constitutional convention and in the ratification contests, and insistently concludes that Congress, in writing the religious freedom clause, took the broad view, flatly prohibiting government support to religion in generali.e., to all denominations, without discrimination. Opponents argue that the Framers did not intend to forbid aid to all denominations on a nondiscriminatory basis. Levy takes on McCloskey, Corwin, Justices White, Burger, Rehnquist, the Attorney General, the President himself. It is no contest. Church versus State

The confrontation between religious and secular values is one of the hottest issues that will confront the Supreme Court in the twenty-first century. Surprisingly, few Americans are schooled in the origins of the First Amendment and the thinking of James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and other founding founders in including this clause as part of the Bill of Rights. A good portion of the volume discusses this extremely relevant topic. We learn that Madison was instrumental in the passage of the Establishment Clause. He saw it as a limitation on the power of Congress to coerce individuals to worship God in any manner inconsistent with their conscience, indeed to enact any law that involved religious topics.

The book continues its discussion of efforts to promote prayer and religious doctrine through government backing by examining leading 19th and 20th century Supreme Court cases. I learned that the celebrated liberal Justice William O. Douglas wrote opinions that weakened the wall of separation; he authored conservative decisions that called for the encouragement of religion by the state...(I expected the opposite). Every informed citizen probably should read this book to discover why the establishment clause is an essential pillar of American liberty.

The definitive book on "The Establishment Clause"

Leonard Levy, one of the country's leading constitutional historians, gives an incisive and informative history as to how and why the Establishment Clause (and the entire First Amendment) came into being. While it is true that the original colonists escaped religious (read that "christian") persecution in Europe, Mr. Levy exposes the lie that they came here for "religious freedom." That's not entirely the case as the original colonies were, in fact, little theocracies.
A great book, well written and easy to understand. If you are a "First Amendment" enthusiast, this is the book for you.

Eloise, we love you too!

HONEY, I LOVE and other love poems is simply put, one of the all-time best books of poetry ever written - and it is loved and enjoyed by adults as well as children. Eloise Greenfield's poetry is full of wisdom, simplicity, and elegance. The title poem reflects a childhood any child would be privileged to have - a "flying pool," a cousin from the South whose words just kinda "slide" out of his mouth, a Mama whose arm is for holding her child...and for being kissed. What more could anyone need? The other poems are brilliant as well - especially HARRIET TUBMAN who didn't "take no stuff." This poem, in fact, is an anthem for school children everywhere, who love a hero and aspire to be one as well. Poetry doesn't get any better than the stuff that comes out of Eloise Greenfield's experiences, heart, and pen. As an author and teacher myself, I admire the timeless nature and awesome craftwork in this book, and I share it every chance I get. Honey, you'll love it!

Pure, Beautiful Poetry for Any Age

This book is a must for any child's bookcase, particularly if one wants to rear a child who is sensitive, racially tolerant and in tune with the beauty of language.

These poems are of pure emotion: love, joy, loss, bravery, silliness. The voice is childlike but amazingly profound as the poems cover a squeaky school piano, a Southern cousin whose every word "just kind off slides out of his mouth" and the complete abandon one feels when dancing deep in the music of Earth, Wind and Fire.

My favorite two poems are a bit more serious. In "Keepsake," Greenfield uses just nine simple lines to convey loss, and the impact adults can have on children. This is not a maudlin poem that is too heavy or upsetting. Although it deals with death, it's respectful and loving. And the poem "Harriet Tubman" is amazing, deftly describing the woman's heroics and bravery in a satisfying and strong verse.

Honey, I Love is a thought-provoking work that stands the test of time. It's a book that adults and children can, and should, enjoy together.

Our Unwinnable War

Bacteria have a bad reputation. We think of them as causing illness, and that's correct, of course, but overwhelmingly they do not cause us harm. Without them, indeed, we could not digest our food, and elements could not be recycled into the environment. They have been performing this sort of vital service for around 600 million years. There are a million or so microbes we know about, and of them, only 1,415 are known to cause disease in humans, with the rest steadily chugging away to keep the world in balance. Those pathogenic ones are the main subject in _Deadly Companions: How Microbes Shaped Our History_ (Oxford University Press) by Dorothy H. Crawford. A microbiologist, Crawford has written plenty of scientific papers, but here (as in a previous book about viruses) she writes for a popular audience to show how microbes, especially the ones that bother and kill us, have affected the humans that are interlopers in their world. We must never forget that most microbes are our companions and are not deadly, and that we live in a mutually beneficial partnership with millions of them. But it is their world: "We relative newcomers to the planet," ominously writes Crawford, "emerge from the safe environment of our mother's womb pristine, untouched by the infectious microbes, but within hours our bodies are colonised by swarms of them, all intent on living off this new food source."

Microbes don't mean to hurt us, of course, and despite the upsurge of religious feeling that accompanies any plague, there is no reason to think that they are doing anything but their natural cycles without any supernatural tinkering to deliver lessons to afflicted humans. The great problem with infective microbes is that they can change faster than we can. Resistance to the antibiotics we have had for only a few decades is merely the most recent manifestation of their evolutionary adaptability, and there is no reason to think that any new generation of antibiotics is going to change this pattern. Crawford shows how different microbes afflicted us when we were hunter gatherers than did so when we changed to living in farming communities. Diseases have changed history. The ruler Crawford mentions that seems to have been most affected by them was Napoleon. He wanted to extend his empire into the New World, but mosquito-borne yellow fever decimated the troops within the Caribbean, and prevented his plan to move on to New Orleans and points north. It was not just the cold and starvation that kept Napoleon's troops from taking Russia. Louse-borne typhus took its toll, and without it, many historians think Napoleon could have gone on to conquer Europe.

Crawford takes up bubonic plague, the potato blight fungus, cholera, smallpox and many more, explaining the natural cycle of each microbe, its vectors (mosquitoes, fleas, lice) and its reservoirs in the wild (snails, birds, cattle). It isn't all biology; Crawford points out that _the_ major cause of microbe-related deaths is poverty, with a hugely disproportionate toll on poorer nations. The science she writes about, all with clarity and enthusiasm, is something new, especially compared to how long we have been going about with these microbial companions. Dealing with diseases scientifically has been regarded as impious; she quotes a 1722 sermon railing against smallpox vaccination "... because inoculation opposes the will of God, who sends disease (including smallpox) either to try our faith or to punish us for our sins." Science, however, is not going to keep us out of trouble; we have headlines these days about microbes that are resistant to our miracle drugs, and our own misuse of drugs against tuberculosis has resulted not in "multiply drug resistant" TB, but in "extensively drug resistant" TB, with "completely drug resistant" TB looming in the future. Even if we were to invent the superdrug researchers jokingly call "gorillacillin", it would kill off our helper microbes as well as the villains, and history shows that even such a drug would be overcome by resistance eventually. It isn't hopeless, and Crawford has written a sobering but not a pessimistic book. We have won battles, and that's something to be proud of. But we will have to content ourselves with winning battles, for we will never win the war.

Quite a bit over my head. One needs to have some background in microbiology and bacteriology to understand the consequences of those damned microbes. It is definite "proof" of Darwin's theory of evolution and natural selection. I felt that the narrative made a strong case for evolution and totally demolished the case for "creation science." I wish the book was less technical, although I have no idea on how to accomplish that goal. I commend the author for making to attempt to enlighten the unenlightened.

Bathing without a Battle second edition

This book should be in the resource library of every nursing home. The information about bathing residents with memory loss is based on research conducted in nursing homes. The bathing experience can be very stressful for residents with memory loss. Enhancing the bathing experience not only helps residents but will prevent injuries to staff members.

If you are struggling with a person who has Dementia/Alzheimer's disease and getting them to come into contact with water this book offers understanding and compassion regarding the dynamics of bathing when someone is ill. What I liked best about this book is that it truly is "person-directed" provides useful tips such as how to focus more on the person than on the task or how to help the person feel more in control. I have used several of the techniques and have been very successful. This book changed my perspective and approach to the bathing process. While I am not a nurse I have been caring for an individual in my family who has more than moderate Alzheimer disease and it has been a significant challenge in the bathing process. I think this book is for anyone facing this issue and the book is written very clearly, with sensitivity and compassion towards both the caregiver and the individual who has dementia. I highly recommend this book.

About the Author
Bruno Latour is a philosopher and anthropologist working in Paris. His many books on science and culture include Pandora's Box: Essays in the Reality of Science Studies, Science in Action, The Pasteurization of France, and Laboratory Life. He was curator of the ZKM exhibit ICONOCLASH and co-edited the accompanying MIT Press book ICONOCLASH: Beyond the Image Wars in Science, Religion, and Art.

A superb textbook about Nothing made visible

In many ways this massive Yellow Pages-sized book sums up what I have always suspected about the visual arts in our time as such: That their greatness comes from the collective force of one-liners which are not all that arresting taken individually. This book really shows that the function of art in our time is that of a collective commentary on the Sutra of Art, and as such necessarily way more verbose than the original "sacred" text. Here all the eminently forgettable one-liner images made in the name of art, anti-art, art-taboo, and art voodoo throughout history---from all cultures--are gathered and presented in the full glory of their collective greatness.
But, do take note that this book is not an "art book" as such, and certainly not a coffee table variety. It belongs on your desk along with your dictionaries and encyclopedias. This is a textbook at its finest. The meat of this book is really the essays, with the images---many of them small but very clear-- inserted to augment the discussion, not the other way around.
So then what are some of the things discussed? A set of essays is grouped under a particular question, and there are some 12 plus questions that cue you in right away as to what is going to be discussed. It is like having a seminar program showing the topics to be discussed, time, and room numbers.
Some of the questions asked and responded to: WHY DO IMAGES TRIGGER SO MUCH FUROR? WHY ARE IMAGES SO AMBIGUOUS? WHY DO GODS OBJECT TO IMAGES? WHAT IS ICONOCLASH? WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO MODERN ART? HAS CRITIQUE ENDED?
What intelligent person could possibly resist the temptation to find out what people have said in response to these questions? I would be a liar to say that I have read through every single essay in the book. I have not. But what I have read so far--a huge chunk--have all been very thoughtful and sincere. Now that's rare in a book whose subject matter concerns art-talk!
With over fifty people writing, talking, interviewing, there is a huge range of styles of discourse, some delightful, some witty, some funny, some dry. But, all in all, this is a very thoughtful and timely presentation of an important subject with minimum pretentiousness. As the subtitle indicates, it concerns all who take interest in the problem of images in art, religion, and science. Highly recommended.

I have always enjoyed reading about the mafia. I went to Alkatraz and stood in his cell. I just find it interesting, not that I like murder for any reason. Good read.

Poor sentence constrution

The book is very short with very bare information. Sentence construction reflects an author whose first language is not English. At least one has an idea of the life of Capone, but just barely. The book is not worth its price.
