I've been an event planner for 20 years but in only the first two chapters of this book, I was learning bits and pieces here and there and it's been amazing! The way the material is presented ties together everything I've done all this time without knowing the organizational strategies behind them. As an event planner, we're often behind the scenes but the info in this book demands us to step up front and be involved as a strong partner so that we're able to add strategic value to meetings and events. Great, great info! Can't wait to dig deeper as I go through each chapter!

I'd say my favorite thing about Mr

I bought this after reading somewhere else that ANOTHER one of Sugarman's staples was all wrapped up into this book anyway.

I haven't even finished the whole thing but sheesh… studying the psychological triggers alone will give you so much freaking insight into ALL advertising!! You will be a nerd and lose 80% of your friends with how annoyingly observant you'll be.

The book is also chock full of REAL examples.

I'd say my favorite thing about Mr. Sugarman's writing is his really humble personality that comes through. He shares his experiences. He just tell you (so you can learn) where he went wrong in the past—where his ideas and campaigns made him "lose his shirt."

I've learned a ton from this book. Add it to your copywriting library.

Sugarman Learned On His Own Dime

And that is what makes this book so good.

Sugarman never did much writing for other people.
He wrote to cover his payroll and build his own
business - risking Millions of dollars a year,
OF HIS OWN MONEY, to test his ideas.

He confesses he lost more often than he won but
when he wrote a winner he sometimes won big. Along
the way he learned harsh truths about business.

He's not only a gifted and original copywriter,
he's a shrewd business strategist - Sugarman
promoted electronic gimmicks and gadgets that
would get severely devalued as new technology came
along, sometimes in a matter of months - so he's
particularly relevant to writers and marketers
in the "internet marketing" niches today, where the
novel and hypey often carries the day.

I read Sugraman's ads when I was a kid and also
Drew Kaplan's (when will that Masked Man write
a book?) and was transfixed. Still later in I
discovered J. Peterman's catalogs.

I got started writing copy for my woodworking business
before I lost interest in the long hours and physical
grind of production. Writing copy later became the
keystone to my success online - and Sugarman was the
first copywriting "bible" I acquired.

I wouldn't actually recommend this book as the first one
you read - it's about marketing and the mail order business
as much as it is about psychology and copywriting... so
it doesn't cover salesletter structure in a way that will
be useful to everybody just starting out... unless you
sell gadgets like Sugarman did. I'm not saying he is not
a master because he clearly is - just that there are other
books you might want to read first like Victor Schwab's
excellent book.

Great book, great value, buy it today!

If you have even a little bit of interest in writing or editing or working in any kind of advertising, even if it is just a simple flyer for your business or nonprofit fund raiser this book will easily pay for itself.
I've read and reviewed a few books on writing, from Stephen King's nonfiction work on writing fiction to books on writing nonfiction. This work stands up there with the best of them, and I'd recommend this work to writers of all types. Joseph Sugarman explains the purpose of the headline. It's to get the second line read. The purpose of the second line, well, that's to get the third line read. If fiction writers followed this formula, they'd sell more books. I can't count how many books, both nonfiction and fiction, I put down after a short time because I just find no reason to go on.
But this book isn't about writing fiction or nonfiction, it's about writing great copy. The reason I bring up other types of writing is that they all have the same strengths or weaknesses' going for them that get them read or ignored.
A copy writer has a short time to get the reader to either send money or request more information or act in some way. The fiction writer has to grab the readers attention and I mean now. See my review for Noah Lukeman's "The First Five Pages", basically he's got the same advice for fiction writers, you better grab the readers attention, and you better be flawless, because you have about the first five pages to win or lose the game. Often less.
In copy writing you have the first five words. Often less. Same idea.
I highly recommend this work to writers of all types. If you're in advertising, even if just for your own small business, you'd be foolish to pass on this one.

Grade 1-4?Nobody can organize a field trip like the indomitable Ms. Frizzle! This time out she introduces her class to the insect kingdom via an excursion through a honeybee hive. Garbed in bee costumes complete with antennae, and sprayed with the proper pheromones, the students are accepted by the workers and allowed to perform such chores as foraging for nectar and pollen, building honeycombs, making honey, and feeding larvae. They also have the opportunity to observe typical honeybee behavior. The field trip ends with a bit of drama when a bear tries to raid the hive. A plethora of pseudo school reports provide additional information on the topic. Degen's colorful and amusing cartoons heighten the adventures. Clearly written and well organized, this new title presents accurate scientific information leavened with a touch of humor that is never condescending. The character of the magical Ms. Frizzle is as well developed and intriguing as ever. Charles Micucci's The Life and Times of the Honeybee (Ticknor & Fields, 1995) provides greater detail on honeybee behavior, but Cole's title is more tightly organized. It lacks the close-up color photography provided in Heiderose and Andreas Fischer-Nagel's excellent Life of the Honeybee (Carolrhoda, 1986) but it provides much the same general information and will be a good companion volume. When Ms. Frizzle's students board the magic school bus for a class trip to watch a beekeeper, no one should be surprised when the bus turns into a beehive and the children morph into bees. Still recognizable despite their bee suits, wings, and antennae, Arnold and his classmates visit flowers to gather nectar and soon gain admittance to a nearby hive. There Ms. Frizzle leads them on an informative tour and explains bee communication, hive making, honey production, social structure, mating, development, and metamorphosis. As in the earlier books, the text appears in boxes, in notebook-paper pages of student reports, and in the voice balloons of the characters. Degen's humorous line drawings washed with watercolors fill the pages with plenty of action and intriguing details. Given the series' enormous popularity, children will open this book with high expectations for fun as well as facts. They will not be disappointed. Carolyn Phelan

He describes the importation of Arabisms following the eighth-century Arab conquest of Spain, distinguishing those documented in medieval sources from those adopted for everyday use, many of which survive in modern Spanish. He considers the influence of Old French and Old Provencal and identifies late direct and indirect borrowings from Latin, including the Italian elements taken up during the Renaissance. After outlining minor influences from languages such as Flemish, Portuguese, and Catalan, Professor Dworkin examines the effects on the lexicon of contact between Spanish and the indigenous languages of South and Central America, and the impact of contact with English. The book is aimed at advanced students and scholars of Spanish linguistics and will interest specialists in Hispanic literary and cultural studies.

Steven N. Dworkin is Professor of Romance Linguistics and Linguistics at the University of Michigan. His books include Etymology and Derivational Morphology: The Genesis of Old Spanish Denominal Adjectives in -ido (Niemeyer, 1985); with David J. Billick, Lexical Studies of Medieval Spanish Texts (second edition Hispanic Seminary of Medieval Studies, 1993); and, co-edited with Dieter Wanner, New approaches to Old Problems: Issues in Romance Historical Linguistic (John Benjamins, 2000). He is the author of over eighty scholarly articles, many of which deal with lexical change in Spanish.

A historical survey of Spanish's layers of words that manages to be both accessible and deep

This book is exactly what the title suggests: Steven Dworkin surveys how the Spanish lexicon has evolved over the last 2000 years plus, and from what sources it has drawn its borrowings.

Each chapter covers a different layer, proceeding in chronological order: 1) pre-Roman languages (Pre-Basque, Celtic), 2) the Latin base of the Spanish lexicon, 3) the Germanic component, 4) the Arabic component, 5) Gallo-Romance (French and Occitan), 6) Italian, 7) Latinisms (borrowings from learned Latin after the development of a distinct Spanish language), 8) Portuguese and Catalan loans, 10) borrowings from the languages of the New World, and 11) Anglicisms from the early modern era to the present one of globalization. In each chapter, Dworkin synthesizes previous scholarship, and if there is controversy over any issue he presents it in full.

While this is published by Oxford University Press and written by a scholar with decades of formal publications, the book is in fact remarkably accessible to a wide audience. While a modicum of Spanish is necessary to enjoy this book, Dworkin glosses most Spanish words. It's both a friendly introduction and a valuable contribution to the field, as Dworkin refers to many obscure references like unpublished doctoral dissertations that might otherwise have gone unnoticed.

Penny's A History of the Spanish Language is still worth checking out alongside this, as it has some more in-depth coverage in a few areas, but Dworkin's book is great fun and recommended as a first stop to anyone interested in how Spanish has evolved.

The best account of the heroic age of Antarctic exploration.

An excellent book for anyone interested in the heroic age of Antarctic exploration ie just over a century ago. The author has woven together the Antarctic expeditions of Mawson, Scott, Amundsen and Shackleton during the first dozen years of the 20th Century with background of the previous explorers who had sighted or landed on the Antarctic continent and the scientific discoveries they made and the theories they were trying to prove. As a child, 60 or so years ago, I read all the classics but learnt a lot reading this well written and gripping book.

What a fantastic effort Peter FitzSimons has done to conquer the lives, times and adventures of the explorers in this book. I enjoyed it from cover to cover. The continuing harrowing experiences that these men were put through to realise their dreams is captured in great detail by Peter. I would recomend this book to anyone who is looking for inspiration to leap into the abys to capture their own dreams. Well done to Peter FitzSimons and all who worked to put this history capturing work together.

If in doubt - go for it

I'm glad the initial reviews on this book have been removed as they were about the cost of the Kindle version and nothing about the book itself. To the knockers of this book - get over the fact that this book is written in a style that makes it easier for the general public to read.

This is a great book that intertwines 4 adventures into one great story. What the human spirit is capable of never ceases to amaze me and this book captures that so well.

From a kiwi to an Aussie - thank you Peter for this story and also for a lot of the other stories you have written. Keep it up
