Theater historian Woll's scholarly yet entertaining account of the rise, fall, and resurrection of the black musical fleshes out a neglected but vital aspect of American musical theater. Woll starts with minstrel shows and "coon songs" and follows the development of the musical through the great shows of the twenties to current-day blockbusters like Ain't Misbehavin' . Throughout, stage history has paralleled social history; a subtext of discrimination against black performers and authors underscores Woll's splendid re-creation of the world of Cole and Johnson, Williams and Walker, Florence Mills, and countless others. A discography would have been welcome, but this is a minor complaint about a well-researched and admirable work. Essential for all theater and black studies collections. Black Musical Theatre begins its historical survey with Clorindy, the Origin of the Cakewalk and A Trip to Coontown, in 1898, and concludes with the Broadway smash Dreanigirls, in 1981. The section on the ragtime pianist and composer Eubie Blake and his popular 1920s show, Shuffle Along, attests to early black influence in American musical theater. Prior to the 1920s, black musical theater was enriched by Walker and Williams, Cole and Johnson, Miller and Lyles, and Ernest Hogan. White producers and composers such as George Gershwin (Porgy and Bess) who were deeply involved in black musicals are given due coverage, and the problems inherent in relations with whites over such issues as stereotyping are fully examined. Other political issues such as the lack of social criticism in white-created musicals is treated with perception. The photographs are often chosen from the Billy Rose Theatre Collection, New York Public Library, and add a visual dimension to the exposition that will be of great value to students of musical history. Costume and scenery designers will also appreciate the stills from Hot Mikado, Carmen Jones, and The Wiz. Other illustrations include sheet music, performers (such as Louis Armstrong), and programs. The tap dance, gospel songs, jazz. and other elements of musical theater were perfected by black performers and composers, and were an intricate part of the Broadway tradition that has since extended its influence into television, popular music, and film. Prepare to be surprised!

As a boy this was one of my very favorite books. I remember crawling into the nice warm space between the pot bellied stove and the wall on cold wintry Michigan days. I'd escape into a wonderful world of heroes, giants and angry Gods who all vied with each other in epic struggle. What a great tale! Men who cleverly outwitted foes of great strength and supernatural powers to accomplish their ultimate wish...to return home with honor. I seldom spoke to others of this tale, because I was so self conscious that I probably did not know how to pronounce so many of the names. Now along comes a version that has such great illustrations that one wonders how it can be offered at this price. Many "Art" books costing multiples of Amazon's price are not nearly so nice. My wife (who is a graphic artist in her own right) saw the first copy I bought and urged me to buy more copies for all the grand kids, which I did. I expected it to be nice and was really surprised at how much it exceeded my expectations!
Highly recommended to folks who love a great adventure that has endured through centuries and especially to those who love great illustration.

What is Poseidon up to, and what happens when Odysseus must deal with deadly sirens? As Odysseus struggles to make it home, while fighting his own battles, Penelope must challenge an invasion of her palace. What do the greedy men want, and will she be forced into choosing a new husband? Will Odysseus be able to rescue his wife, and who will survive? Who told Penelope that her husband is dead, and does she believe it? This fun-filled story is exciting, and fascinating from beginning to end. Highly Recommended to young readers, ages 8 and up. The author paints mystical-magic throughout, the illustrations are stunning, and fans of mythology will enjoy as this book entertains from beginning to end!

Awesome classic for young readers/listeners

I actually found this book at my local public library. I Love the Odyssey and wanted to share it with my kids (6 & 8 years) in a format that is suitable for younger readers. We've been reading this book every night. They beg me not to stop reading. They are loving it. The author retells the story in a way that enraptures my sons' imaginations. Even my husband wants to sit in the room and listen. It's great to have a young readers' version of this book that sparks their curiosity and attention. Someday, when this story is assigned to them in high school and beyond, they will have an understanding of the plot and characters. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves Greek classics and wants to expose a child to this epic story.

Madness?

We are introduced to beautiful, aristocratic Lady Anne when she awakens in a foul cell. She is imprisoned in a Madhouse. She is apparently suffering from post birth psychosis. She has committed the grave crime of murdering and dismembering her infant son. The story grows more fantastic as we meet other characters and discover hidden motives for actions leading to the Anne's incarceration, release, and disappearance. This Victorian age tale is cleverly constructed and the twists are not telegraphed. The conclusion is disconcerting. I liked the episodic construct of the story. The story is told from the thoughts of the major characters. I stayed up late then woke up early to finish this intriguing read.

Compelling, Dark, Keeps you on your toes!

It has been a long time since I've read a book that impressed me to the extent that "The Medea Complex" has. When I first began the book I was mildly impressed, but somewhat aggravated by the actual insanity of the main character. The randomness of her behavior and the constant conjectures of Dr. Savage had me squirming throughout the first chapters. The squirming wasn't negative necessarily, I was enjoying the book but hadn't yet been truly drawn in.

My aggravation towards Dr. Savvage had taken root without any reason much before the book even began.

A few quotes that got my blood boiling:

"Women. Most of them are bordering on the limits of insanity at the best of times." ~Dr. Savage

"I know exactly what caused her insanity. Books. Women and their books." Dr. Savage

Then it happened. I spark of strangeness that I couldn't quite shake. Some happenings that had me questioning what was really going on. Who was right? Who was wrong? Who was the liar? Who killed that baby? I was lost in the book after that.

And I was confused and intrigued until the very end.

Overall This book infuriated me. Obviously, from the rating, you can come to the conclusion that this is actually a very good thing. I was angry at Dr. Savage, I was angry at the nurses, I was angry at Anne's husband, and darned if I wasn't angry at Anne too! I felt sympathy, and disgust, and confusion, and compassion for our main character AND the Dr. throughout the book.

Just when I had started to hate Dr. Savage with all my heart, he would do something genuinely, authentically kind. He would have an epiphany that contradicted his otherwise ignorant and sexist thoughts.

"Sometime simple human wamth can do wonders for a lost person." ~Dr. Savage

What the heck, Dr.! You're not supposed to be good meaning! You're supposed to be easily hated. Why are you making it so difficult to draw perfectly reasonable conclusions about you?

Back and forth. Back and forth. By the middle of the book I had no idea who to trust, or what to make of the situation. I was starting to feel like I was looking through a foggy lense at a puzzle that was poorly pieced together, and yet I was so curious and determined to understand WHAT was going on.

Author Rachel Roberts crafted a fantastic mystery, without making it seem a mystery at all. I was constantly asking myself questions, sitting back and considering the facts presented, and rolling my eyes at the ignorance of the time.

This book was intelligently written and there were no points throughout where I felt there were holes or weak story points. This was a strong, solid work made even more intriguing by the fact that it was based off of true events, true people, true horrors.

I actually feel compelled to check out all of the resources Ms. Roberts compiled at the end of the book for curious readers.

Ms. Roberts has created something that lures the reader into a fog of knowing some things, but not enough things. So, the reader draws their own conclusions based on personal feelings and even a bit of rambling from "Professional" sources. Consideration isn't made for alternatives until it's much too late to be prepared for the twist.

Without giving too much away (because you MUST read this book. RIGHT NOW) I'll say that I was flabbergasted by the way things progressed and the way things ended.

"The Medea Complex" will definitely find itself featured as one of the "Best Books Read in 2014" and Rachel Roberts is now on the list as one of my Favorite Authors.

Rachel needs a tough editor.

There is some good writing in the Medea Complex but too many typos, inconsistencies and other errors in order to receive a high rating. What Rachel needs is a tough, professional editor. I spotted at least 20 typos but the most harm was done with inconsistencies of tone. The subject matter of the book, the killing of a baby by a supposedly insane woman, is simply too dark for comedy but in some sections the tone changes to mad comedy. The dance held at the asylum and the scenes with inspectors Drum and Jones and superintendent Blake lapse into Monty Python comedy. Other problems like the use of slang such as “zip and nada” and modern words such as “smog” breaks the reader from the 19th century. To not end in a completely negative tone, the author produced strong images and well differentiated characters and must have researched the period and subject to some depth.

Chris Cooper is Pro-Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Business Faculty at Oxford Brookes University, UK. Robert Garcia is an editor, writer and graphic designer and has written for Filmfax, Locus, and Cinefantastique. At CFQ he developed a double-issue on the Batman 60s TV show, (written with Joe Desris), the first comprehensive look at the TV show and the first time many of the principal crew members had been interviewed. He was interviewed on the E! special on Adam West as an expert on the show.�Joe Desris, a freelance writer and graphic designer, is a longtime collector and historian of Batman. He wrote the definitive history of the 1940s Batman newspaper strip. He contributed research to the film "Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics" and for Bob Kane's autobiography, "Batman and Me," and has written about Batman for various magazines and books for collectors, including Wizard, Comics Buyer's Guide and Toy Collector.

About the Author
When Floyd Cooper discovered children's book illustrating, he found a way to complement his career in advertising. An apprentice of Mark English, Mr. Cooper began his freelance career while still a student at the University of Oklahoma. After graduating, he made his way to Missouri, where he secured a position at a greeting card company.

Although Mr. Cooper was established in his position there, he felt somewhat stifled. He lacked the freedom and opportunity for spontaneity that he longed for as an artist and the joy that could be found in doing something that he loved.

Determined to break out of the mundane cycle he found himself in, Mr. Cooper relocated to the East Coast in 1984 to pursue his career further. It was there that he discovered the world of children's book illustrating and was amazed by the opportunities for creativity it afforded. Mr. Cooper was energized. The first book he illustrated, Grandpa's Face, captivated reviewers. Publishers Weekly said of newcomer Floyd Cooper's work, "Cooper, in his first picture book, creates family scenes of extraordinary illumination. He reinforces in the pictures the feelings of warmth and affection that exist between generations."

Illustrating children's books is very important to Mr. Cooper. He says, "I feel children are at the frontline in improving society. This might sound a little heavy, but it's true. I feel children's picture books play a role in counteracting all the violence and other negative images conveyed in the media."

Floyd Cooper resides in New Jersey with his wife, Velma, and their two sons.

The GREAT ONES usually start from HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Floyd Cooper's book is the perfect introduction to the early life of one of America's literary giants. This biography covers so much ground, with historical references, as well as stressing the importance of family, that the book is an asset to teach different subject areas.

Smaller children can relate to the simple narrative, while older readers can make connections between the young "dreamer" and the works for which he would be later known.

The book could fit easily in the library of both an elementary or high school.

This story is so moving. Showing hardships, love, and finding acceptance.It tells of an Afician child learning about his history and walking tall as a man. It was very moving, the pictures were soft and had a texture of warmth. I would highly recommend it for reading.

Wonderful Illustrations

The watercolor illustrations employed represent the setting perfectly, regardless if the point in the story was that of a rural Kansas, Kansas City street life, and Mexican village. What wonderful impressionistic artwork! There seems to be an inner light in the faces of each person represented in the illustrations.
The action and music portrayed in the text, carries over into the illustrations. The book's illustrations show movement and action. A sense of happiness or loneliness is conveyed through the watercolor paintings. They are very explicit in showing emotion. Overall, text and illustrations, lend this to being one of the best biographical books for young children.

It looks like an ordinary, soggy blue balloon when the family dog finds it in the garden, but the boy soon finds out that it has "Strange and Wonderful Powers." This balloon is indestructible: it refuses to pop, even when squeezed, squashed and whacked with a stick. It disappears and comes back shaped like a square; it even takes the boy "for a fly" to another planet. Readers will delight in discovering that the book, like the balloon, has some special features: several pages fold out (and/or up), enabling the balloon to grow and stretch into various shapes. Both boy and dog have wonderfully expressive faces as they react to the balloon's extraordinary feats. Inkpen has created an imaginative, beautifully produced book. Ages 3-8.

The young child, whose antics readers follow, is reminiscent of an Oxenbury child, and the occasional expanded and unusual fold-out pages will no doubt add to the book's child appeal. The story, however, is slight indeed. The child's dog finds "a soggy blue balloon" that, once inflated, offers a host of unending magical tricks, including an extraterrestrial excursion that thoroughly entertains the child but that will leave readers flat. Although appealing to look at, this book offers little in the way of originality or substance. The Blue Balloon would do best to sail silently back across the sea from whence it came. --J. J. Beautifully illustrated and full of the kinds of visual surprises kids love. What's On (July 1993) Inkpen's pale watercolours against a white background give a cool, calm feel, while the use of pull-out pages and sequences of pictures give an animated feel. Beginner readers will be able to tackle the simple text, but it's a great story to share with all ages. Junior, July 2000

A sweet story for little kids

This is a good book to use for beginning reading to your child. It's simple to read, the pictures are cute, and the fold out surprises make the book engaging for even the youngest readers. My daughter is 6 months old, and enjoys having this book read to her... We always make an event of unfolding the pictures of the balloon as it changes shape and grows, and her eyes widen in delight!

I purchased this book before Kipper became popular. I am a Speech-Language Pathologist and all my clients love the book. It provides for enjoyment even after reading it several times to a child. It's great for language stimulation for verbs, adjectives, locatives, and colors. It has become my favorite book of all time.
