A brilliant framework for managing knowledge assets

It would be difficult to over-estimate the value of this book. It is very important contribution to our understanding of how to build and manage knowledge assets and, in particular, the rules by which knowledge gains and loses value and 'travels'.
It is directly useful to business people who have to wrestle with strategies for managing knowledge. It is also a formidable piece of analytical architecture that links the management of knowledge assets to economic theory and learning theory. Considering the depth and range of the original thought packed into it, the book is surprisingly readable, partly because of the clarity and relevance of the examples with which the author illustrates his concepts.
Perhaps of widest importance is the clarity and precision of the definitions offered, in a field in which the definitions have been notably 'muddy'. One of the things I have gained from reading the book is a much clearer 'mental model' of what knowledge management is all about, its dynamics and linkages, and what is happening at various stages in the development, codification and diffusion of knowledge.
Because of its depth, density and range, absorbing the content requires real effort, but the effort is very worthwhile. It has several different audiences.
Knowledge managers: Those directly responsible for knowledge management will want to read and understand this book in full.
Business Strategists: The book provides a coherent and well argued rationale for developing strategies around the exploitation of the value in knowledge assets, based on the clearest explanation of the dynamics of knowledge value creation and dissipation that I have seen.
Managers of Organisational Change: Anyone concerned with organisation change also needs to understand the underlying concepts for their relevance to strategies for learning and to the shaping and linking of organisational structures.
Economists: Chapters 2 - 4 provide economists with a re-conception of the production function around data as a factor of production, and an explanation of the nature and dynamics of information value that is both challenging and important in integrating the realities of information and knowledge value into economic theory.
Those with a more peripheral or general interest in knowledge management should at least read: * the Preface, which is a 2 1/2 page masterpiece in the expression of the central concept in a compressed form, * pages 12 - 14 and 18 of the Introduction and * they should scan Chapter 3: The Information Space (I-Space) to understand the author's three dimensional construct and its use. J-C Spender's short Foreword is also valuable in putting Boisot's work in context with other work, particularly Nonaka and Takeuchi's The Knowledge Creating Company.
If general readers are tempted to go further, they will find an extraordinary range of thought-provoking concepts along with quite a lot of material that may be familiar from other writers: Boisot's primary aim is to get us to think differently about our world and to recognise that much of our current thinking about information and knowledge is grounded in the very different world of the energy based economy. He provides an alternative framework that is rigorous, persuasive and practical.

STRONG WELL WRITTEN MASTER PIECE

The decision to read a book, any book, is an exercise in cost-benefit-analysis, usually conducted under conditions of uncertainty (Boisot, 1998). This review strives to mitigate this uncertainty and instigate you to read it!
Boisot delivers a genuine new perspective on knowledge assets quite distinct from the existing knowledge literature. First he states that knowledge is embedded in physical objects (public knowledge -like a pack of Marlboros - understood as a pack of cigarettes of a certain quality and length), in documents, and in individual brains. He builds a three dimensional Information-space consisting of codification (codified - uncodified), abstraction (abstract - concrete), and diffusion (diffused - undiffused). Plot these elements on three axes of a three dimensional rectangle and you got Boisot basic mental model. In this box (I-space) the movement of knowledge results in the Social Learning Cycle (SLC). The SLC consists of 6 phases, respectively Scanning, Problem Solving, Abstraction, Diffusion, Absorption, and Impacting. This model fundaments subsequently the rest of the book in which he illustrates the value of knowledge, two learning theories (the N-learning strategy - hoarding knowledge and S-learning strategy - sharing of knowledge), culture in relation to knowledge (identifies the centripetal culture - tunnel vision and the centrifugal culture - promotes learning), core competence and strategic intent, the impact of IT on knowledge and finally applies I-Space on two companies, Courtaulds and BP oil exploration business. The theory Boisot used to build his model and arguments are very fundamental - deep-rooted in classic philosophy-, economy-, and chaos and complexity theories. However the major added value provided lies in the massive multifaceted range of examples offered, very intelligent and smart entrenched.
Knowledge as keyword in the Amazon search engine generates more than 9000 books. However the number that fundaments the basic knowledge theory infrastructure doesn't exceed 25. There are essentially only a few you want to read the rest is all derived from this small number. Boisot book (next to Nonaka & Takeuchi) is certainly one that falls in the in the 25 cluster in view of the fact that it's an outstanding unique mental model clarified by smart examples. Downturn of his theory that's it very difficult to apply in a practical situation, nevertheless read it (absorb and exploit) and capture valuable `knowledge' on knowledge theories.

A solid framework for organizational knowledge

After reading a number of trendy books on knowledge management, this is the second one with a good theoretical framework. It is not a HOW TO..book (the subtitle is not very informative). It is the fruit of solid analytical thinking. Boisot uses the information space, built from the variables 'codification, abstraction and diffusion'. With this framework he gives an original insight into many organizational aspects, like organizational learning, competences, information technology and organizational culture. I have choosen the book for the course I teach at the University of Amsterdam (Culture and Competences in Changing Organizations), after reading it with red ears.

Excellent Brioche Knitting Reference Book With Uneven Collection of Garment Designs

BRIOCHE CHIC is an excellent reference book on brioche knitting that includes an uneven collection of 22 garment designs. There are two methods of brioche knitting: (1) the simple alternating "knit one in the row below" method that produces the well-known, stretchy "fisherman's rib"; and (2) the more complicated alternating "slipped stitch with yarnover" method that the book relies on.

I very much like the designer's explanation of why a knitter might want to use brioche knitting: "The depth of texture and stunning color effects made possible through brioche's stitch manipulation make these pieces worth the time. In colorwork, handling two colors of yarn per row can be easier, since you are working each color one at a time before returning to the beginning to work the second color, much like mosaic knitting. With cables, colorwork, and other texture patterns, the work is often reversible . . . ."

Most of the garment designs are rather plain, but allow knitters to practice the brioche knitting techniques. Most patterns are written for multiple sizes, and call for worsted, DK, or sportweight yarn (and medium-size needles appropriate to the yarns and brioche knitting structure). There are patterns for brioche-knit shawls, hats, mittens, scarves, and sweaters.

A few designs really stand out for me, as garments that I like a lot, and would enjoy knitting. These are the Lattice-Edged Cardigan (an open-front dolman cardigan with directionally knit garter stitch body and wavy brioche stitch cables at the cuffs and fronts that also form a shawl collar); the Cowl-Neck Pullover (the dolman pullover with flat-shaped brioche cables shown in the book cover photo); and the Smocked Blouse (a cap-sleeve stockinette tee with brioche cables along the scoop neckline which ultimately join up with a simple smocking stitch across the front to make a textural bib).

The greatest weakness of this book is the one page that explains how to knit the three basic brioche stitches (slip one, yarnover; brioche knit; brioche purl) that are used in the brioche knitting method used in the book (see the page titled "The Structure of Brioche"). A knitter must read the written explanations carefully, and also study the accompanying line drawings closely, in order to fully understand this brioche method. But as long as a knitter has the skills to reproduce the drawings on her/his own needles, then she/he should be able to knit everything in the book. Brioche knitting isn't particularly difficult, but it's probably best attempted by those with at least intermediate knitting skills.

As a knitter's bookshelf reference, there are step-by-step instructions, with accompanying line drawings and blown-up photos of finished swatches, for each of the following:

---Basic brioche cast-ons and bind-offs (long-tail; Italian tubular; alternate cable; two standard bind-offs; tubular; k2tog bind-off)

---Brioche increases and decreases for shaping (two basic increases; five basic decreases; two advanced decreases)

---Brioche charting for one-color and two-color brioche, in rounds and in rows

---Brioche cables (traditional twisted cables; flat-shaped cables)

---Two-color brioche cast-ons and bind-offs

---Two-color brioche stitch patterns (brioche rib, brioche stockinette)

---Other brioche methods (fisherman's rib; half fisherman's rib; garter brioche stitch; knit-one-below method for two-color brioche stripe)

Excellent Resource and Beautiful Usable Designs

While I have been a fan of Mercedes' designs from her first submission to Interweave Knits years ago. I was hesitant to purchase this book for two reasons.

First because Brioche knitting requires a different set of technical skills than the standard for most knitting styles - I have had difficulty in the past with Brioche patterns that simply assumed the knitter could figure out all of the required increases and decreases without assistance. This book presents all of the technical requirements with both excellent illustrations and with clear written explanations. The patterns are laid out progressively from simple to most complex and the new information is presented with each stage as it is needed. This further clarifies the process because you can compare the simpler designs with the more complex ones to ground yourself in what you are being asked to do. All of the sample sweaters use fairly plain yarns and are clearly photographed from front and back with no arty depth of field or random props or backgrounds obscuring the details from sight. The result is a bit Retro in effect but makes the book infinitely more usable than any number of books currently on the market. Mercedes is working from the point of view that you purchased the book to knit the projects and gives you every support needed to do that successfully.

My second reservation was that I live in a warm climate and rarely wear sweaters. In this respect the book hits it with full value there are 2 short sleeve blouse/sweaters, a tank top and two cardigans. Basic adjustments to fiber choices and I'm good to go. In addition all of the "Men's" sweaters are designs likely to be worn by actual men, and there are enough excellent accessories to take care of all of my holiday knitting.

Kudos to the publisher for supporting a topic that is considered intermediate and congratulations to the designer for authoring such a useful and beautifully produced book. I purchased the Kindle version and am more than happy with it's layout and usability - I like this book enough that I will also purchase the hard copy for my permanent library.

colourful and creative possibilities from a basic knitting technique

Brioche, it's not just for bread. In knitting, the brioche stitch is a unique stitch that combines two common techniques, double knitting with a k1p1 rib to create a unique fabric that's thick and textural. Brioche fabric is often reversible and colour work is simpler than in many traditional forms as each colour is worked one at a time.

Brioche Chic lives up to its title providing 22 knitting patterns many of which are suitable or designed specifically for men. In addition, it contains several knitting classes-worth of material covering the basics of brioche knitting and beyond. The educational sections contain clearly photographed knit swatches, line drawings to illustrate techniques, descriptions, and useful tips.

If you are new to brioche knitting, the first section covers the basics, starting with a single colour brioche rib, either worked flat or in the round. After that foundation skill is learned, additional techniques such as shaping and how to decode the brioche stitch language in both abbreviation (such as brykyobrkyobrk) and chart form are covered. The tips are helpful, such as how and why to use locking stitch markers (or coil-less safety pins) to mark individual stitches. The first two patterns reiterate the basic stitch both knitted flat and in the round. From there the possibilities expand, a shawl shows how increasing can be used to simply and beautifully create a complex looking accessory, and how these basic stitches can be paired with classic garment shapes to create something special.

After covering the basics, Tarasovich-Clark shows how basic brioche stitches can be transformed further with twisted stitches (cables) and the introduction of a second colour, many of these stitches are reversible, but not all. It was fascinating to learn how different weight yarns can be paired to change the effect of the vertical stripes in an otherwise ordinary two-colour brioche rib. The patterns for these two sections also build on the skills explained at the start of each chapter, the garments are based on classic shapes and should appeal to a variety of knitters. The book ends with Special (helpful) Topics, including how to weave in ends, seam, block, how to thread a life line, and correct mistakes.

With Brioche Chic Tarasovich-Clark shows how a basic technique can expand into colourful and creative possibilities.

About the Author

Sarah V. Mackenzie is associate professor of educational leadership at the University of Maine. She has dealt with ethical issues in education for many years, first in her own hands-on experiences as a teacher and teacher leader and now in her role as a professor of educational leadership. Her most recent book, Uncovering Teacher Leadership: Essays and Voices From the Field (Corwin, 2007), is a compilation of writing focused on the inner lives of teacher leaders. She and Richard Ackerman published an article in the May 2006 issue of Educational Leadership titled “Uncovering Teacher Leadership.”

In all of her work―as a teacher and a teacher of teachers and leaders―she has recognized the critical relationship between what teachers believe about their work and how successfully they perform that work.

G. Calvin Mackenzie is The Goldfarb Family Distinguished Professor of American Government at Colby College. He has written extensively about ethics in government and has led ethics seminars for public officials across the country. He served as chair of the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices and was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. A political scientist by training, Mackenzie has been a government professor and scholar for more than 30 years. He has written or edited 15 books, including a leading introductory American government text and several award-winning empirical studies of the national government. His latest book, The Liberal Hour: Washington and the Politics of Change in the 1960s (with Robert Weisbrot) was a finalist for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize in History.

Important but a bit Tendentious; 4.5 stars

This is another important and interesting book from Stanley Payne, author of the excellent The Franco Regime and other fine books on Spanish and European history. The Collapse... is a detailed analysis of the events leading up to the end of the Second Spanish Republic and the Spanish Civil War. Payne presents a detailed chronological narrative of the political history of the final years of the Republic accompanied by some structural analysis, notably in a good summary chapter at the end of the book. In Payne's view, the fall of the Republic resulted from a combination of weak political institutions and particularly the rash and anti-democratic actions of the Spanish Left. The latter including not only definitely Left wing parties like the anarcho-syndicalists and Socialists but also middle class left of center Liberal parties. In Payne's analysis, the Civil War was precipitated by the Left's disregard of democratic principles, flouting of the law, and pursuit of radical policies that would eventually push the Right into revolt. Payne is harshly critical of the major leaders of the Left, particularly the Liberal leaders Azana and the Socialist leaders Largo Caballero and Prieto. The President of the Republic, Alcala Zamora, also comes in for considerable criticism for actions that degraded the democratic nature of the parliamentary process. As an indictment of the actions of the Spanish Left, this book is very effective.

I think, however, that Payne's analysis is somewhat incomplete. As he himself points out, the weak political institutions of the Republic stemmed in good part from the destruction of the prior parliamentary system by the immediately preceding military dictatorship of Primo de Rivera. While Payne is appropriately critical of the leadership of the Left, I think he lets the Right leadership off too lightly. There was continuous military plotting against the Republic throughout its lifespan. At least one Rightist group, the Carlists, actually engaged in treasonous dealings with the Italian Fascist government. Payne's point that much of this intrigue was not very threatening is probably correct but since the Republic emerged from a military dictatorship, it was certain to be perceived as very threatening by the Left. Payne points to the anti-clerical behavior of the Left as particularly destructive. There is no doubt he is correct but nowhere does he mention that the Catholic hierarchy oppposed not only clearly wrong actions of the Left like suppression of the Jesuits but also more democratic actions like the separation of church and state. The major Right party, the CEDA, under the leadership of Gil Robles, was more law abiding than several of the Leftist groups, but Gil Robles never unequivocally committed to democratic principles and flirted with fascist style rhetoric. As Payne points out, both the major party of the Left, the Socialists, and the major party of the Right, the CEDA, were at best "semi-loyal" to the Republic. Finally, Payne hardly mentions some important aspects of the international background of the Republic. By the mid-30s, the Leftist parties would have seen many of their cognate parties in central and eastern Europe crushed by Rightist movements. The most important Socialist party in Europe, and one committed to democratic practices, the German Socialists, had been destroyed by the Nazi 'back door' revolution based on abuse on a parliamentary/electoral system. It wasn't unreasonable for the Spanish Socialists to fear something similar in Spain. None of these facts exculpate the Spanish Left but they do make their actions easier to understand.

Chapeau!

Stanley Payne is one of the hispanists who knows what he speaks about. Many others, even Spaniards, select the facts conveying to a previous conclusion. Payne is not like that.

In a recent interview, he said that "spanish war was not a war of good peeople against bad people; it was a war of bad people against bad people". I fully agree.

When someone, like the present Government, tries to re-write the history defeating Franco thirty years after he was dead, there is a danger: Many ghosts (from both sides) can come out and, once they are out, nobody could know how to get rid of them.

Excellent research, but biased work

Many people will agree that the Spanish Civil War was one of the most contentious and bitter conflicts of the twentieth century. To learn more about this conflict it is important to learn about the Spanish Second Republic, 1931-1936 and its demise. Stanley Payne is one of the few historians with an excellent track record on documenting the Spanish Civil War (Hugh Thomas, Paul Preston and Gabriel Jackson being the others). However, Mr. Payne stumbles or, perhaps more accurately commits the sin of allowing bias to come into his research.

The research is high quality, although I would have liked to have seen more government data. Mr. Payne relies almost exclusively on personal memoirs and the citations of other authors. As I read the book I felt almost as if he were trying to justify the revolt led by Francisco Franco. Frequently comparing the Spanish Second Republic to Hitler and the Nazis, Payne essentially blames it for allowing all the violence that led up to the Spanish Civil War. He blames the Socialists for violence.

Manuel Aza�a, the prime minister in 1931 and who played a significant role in the affairs of the Republic, is portrayed as an arrogant and uncompromising egotist and the president, Niceto Alcal� Zamora is depicted as a manipulator who frequently suppressed the constitutionality of the government and restricted the Cortes from doing its job.

Payne blames the Socialists and the Left Republicans for fostering and condoning violent campaigns against the right. At times he contradicts himself: he claims that the left invented the fascist threat--that there was no fascist organization in Spain, but then later he elaborates on the role of the Falange and its victimization at the hands of the leftists. At one point he writes: "The Spanish Left insisted on a permanentely leftist regime that could ignore the rules of the game but guarantee predictable results, not a functioning democracy."

Mr. Payne is at the top of his game with his research. I learned quite a bit about some of the political parties that took part in the Republic. However, he should have included a table at the beginning to serve as a reference for all the parties and their acronyms. I frequently had to look back through the book to see what the acronyms stood for. A reference table would have been very helpful.

The underlying theme of the book seems to be that the right (especially the CEDA) tried as hard as it could to work with the Republic but frequently found itself to be under violent attack. Another theme that Payne emphasizes is the attacks on churches and the clergy. Once again we see that only the left was violent. I would have liked Payne to have elaborated more on the relationship between the Church and the monarchists, since they did form an important part of the nationalists. Unfortunately, he only mentions that Renovaci�n Espa�ola (the monarchist party) went to Italy to ask for support from Mussolini.

Towards the end of the book he portrays Franco as someone not willing to revolt (until the assassination of Calvo Sotelo)and as a firm supporter of the Republic. Payne also claims that Emilio Mola, the architect behind the revolt, made a last ditch effort to avoid the conflict. The evidence that Payne presents to support this is not very strong and is open to any type of interpretation.

It would have been much better if Payne had presented a more balanced view of the Second Republic and the elements that contributed to its downfall. Historians must be very careful not to cross a certain line when they present research and I think Payne comes dangerously close to doing so. And it would be a shame to label this book 'anti-left propaganda.' But at times it seems as if Payne is intending to debunk the notion that the Second Republic failed because of strong rightist opposition. There was no need for this other than to also debunk that other stalward of leftist mythology. It made no sense whatsover for the Allende government to even be mentioned in this book. This was not a good way to conclude his work and I am disappointed that Payne made this decision.

I think that for anyone not familiar with the Spanish Civil War, this will be a difficult read. At times it became pedantic. But for anyone who enjoys reading about Spanish history or about the Spanish Civil War, this is worth reading. However, the reader should also read Hugh Thomas's "The Spanish Civil War" to temper it.

Self Awareness in a Bottle: Better than any religion or expensive Psychotherapy

For those on their maiden voyage into the complex realm of self-definition and self-awareness, there is no better companion written than this book by Dr. David Viscott. "The Language of Feelings," which is in reality, a primer of applied Freudian psychology, is short, sweet, to the point, and most importantly, is everywhere correct.

Viscott is a giant among the many "quick cure," "psycho-babble," and "feel good" pygmies and shysters. He provides what others of that ilk can only dream of: the true skinny about how we relate to ourselves through our feelings.

Without fanfare, ideologies or religion and without elaborate promises of magic cures, he guides us through each feeling, one-by-one: "hurt and loss," "anxiety," "anger," "guilt," "depression," and "getting out of emotional debt," telling us what to expect, what needs they serve, how they interact with our natural defenses and most of all how they go together to make us whole. And everything he says "rings true," because his descriptions -- both in principle and in practice -- are exactly how we do in fact relate to our feelings.

I advise reading "The Language of Feelings" to anyone who has considered religion, expensive psycho-therapy, expensive awareness training, mindless ideologies, or psycho-trophic drugs.

Viscott's considerable psychiatric experience has been boiled down to the "bare bone essentials." In my library of more than 10, 000 books there is none more valuable than this one. No amount of money spent on psychotherapy can match the content of this book.

Without the contents of this book providing the first steps, the journey into self-awareness, which is difficult even under normal circumstances, is likely to be even more difficult.

The book is a superstar among good books. It is clear, no nonsense, and correct. Ten Stars!

Viscott is the best

David Viscott is one of two key leaders in the psychology space who changed my life. His explanations of how feelings work and how to get up to date with our emotions is excellent. I highly recommend this book - his tape "How To Be Your Own Therapist" is life changing - simple and easy to do steps - at the heart of it - talk about your feelings as they happen because when you don't they get stored as other things. He also wrote a book sold here called "The Viscott Method" that takes you through the exact process he used working with clients - it is excellent and people in the field of psychology and psychiatry should use this as a training guide.

The Ultimate UNARMED Combat

The Short:

If you love unarmed combat, dream of racing chariots and fighting in gladiatorial games, wish to sail the seas, love Oriental Adventures, need more spell options, or want to break out of the base class mold; this is the book for you.

If you think your party's human shields ought to wield an actual weapon in the classic D&D environment, prepare for disappointment.

The Long:

To say there is a lot of "love" for the monk in this book is an understatement, it's a full blown obsession. More than 1/4 of the feats are related to unarmed combat (66 Unarmed Strike prereq feats, 10 Imp Grapple, 5 Imp Trip prereqs) and 21 new monk weapons make their debut (out of 40). However, if you are playing a weapon wielding fighter type (paladin, ranger, barbarian, etc.), there is not much love here and the class in most need of Ultimate Combat "love", the base fighter, gets a severe case of frostbite. Other classes not typically consider fighter types (alchemist, magus, wizard, cleric, rogue, druid, etc.) get equal or greater attention (new archetypes for every base class, numerous new feature specific feats, 29 pages of new Spells). It's seems the Ultimate Magic spillover landed here and all the truly martial classes paid for it.

My biggest complaint about the feats, besides too many are tailored towards monks, is expense. Only 12 feats need no prereq (4 require Teamwork). Most feats require 2 or more prereqs and its not uncommon for a "base" feat to have 5 prereqs (stats, class features, skills, race, race feature, and/or a BAB). Too many require specific class features like arcane spell casting, channeling, poison use, bardic performance, hex, wild shape, etc. encouraging multi-classing. Only 1 feat requires any levels in fighter while 21 feats use Monk levels as a possible prereq, usually giving access EARLIER than the BAB option would allow any fighter type to take it. There are simply too many reasons to stop advancing as or to never become a weapon wielding fighter.

Be warned, this is not a stand alone book. Some of the material requires ownership of non-base books, for example the Alchemist (Ultimate Magic) or Cavalier (Advanced Players Guide) Archetypes or the Elemental Fist (APG) or Improved Dirty Trick (APG) feats. If you don't intend to own either, then these pages and feats are a waste.

Mainly for Monks & Optional Rules

Given that combat is an essential part of Pathfinder, I was expecting a substantial supplement to the game that addressed the lingering weak points in the combat system, fighter-style classes, weapons and so on. While this book was a noble attempt at this, it did fall short.

As other reviewers have noted, it is very heavily focused on unarmed combat, which is great for people who are playing monks or who focus on that. However, the material for the other classes and other aspects of combat are somewhat less robust. Also, as other reviewers noted, it looks like some of the Ultimate Magic leftovers got reheated in this work-which should have used the space for the fighter-style classes.

The book does add some optional rules (and rules for guns), but none of these really add much to the Pathfinder game nor does it address the relative lameness of the fighter when compared to other classes. While my players did get this book, we have yet to actually use anything from it.

Hopefully Paizo will come out with an Ultimate Real Combat book that will do what this book should have done.

Excellent book

The only downside to any of the Pathfinder products I have bought is the actual quality of the construction. It seems I am being more careful with the books a lot sooner than with my old 3.5 books. As a matter of fact, none of my 3.5 books are as in the condition that my Pathfinder books are in, and they are a LOT older.

Other than that, this book, like almost all the "ultimate" books, is critical to gameplay. If you are on the fence about buying it, get it now...
