An Engaging Novel

An engaging novel carried forward largely by conversation. Peacock was very familiar with the Classics, and the chapters all have Greek or Latin epigraphs. The conversations are witty, but the characters and Peacock himself are a little too eager to show off their learning. Critics used to say that something "smelled of the lamp," meaning that it was learned in an ostentatious way and showed the effects of "burning the midnight oil"--another phrase you don't hear much any more. A good read for someone willing to use his or her mind and previous education.

Avoid Dodo Press edition

I highly recommend the novel, but the Dodo Press edition doesn't even seem to have been proofread after scanning. There are numerous typos (including character names and symbols instead of letters), foot notes are not at the bottom of the page (you have to search through the body of the text to find them), and the Greek text is not included. Very disappointing.

Throughout, the author identifies two constants bearing directly on the question of who is entitled to relief and who can be excluded: the degree of embeddedness in any given community and the ability to work. Along this dual axis the author locates virtually the entire history of social welfare in early-modern and contemporary Europe.

This work is a systematic defense of the meaningfulness of the category of "the social," written in the tradition of Foucault, Durkheim, and Marx. Castel imaginatively builds on Durkheim's insight into the essentially social basis of work and welfare. Castel populates his sociological framework with vivid characterizations of the transient lives of the "disaffiliated": those colorful itinerants whose very existence proved such a threat to the social fabric of early-modern Europe. Not surprisingly, he discovers that the cruel and punitive measures often directed against these marginal figures are deeply implicated in the techniques and institutions of power and social control.

The author also treats the flipside of the problem of social assistance: namely, matters of work and wage-labor. Castel brilliantly reveals how the seemingly objective line of demarcation between able-bodied beggars—those who are capable of work but who chose not to do so—and those who are truly disabled becomes stretched in modernity to make room for the category of the "working poor." It is the novel crisis posed by those masses of population who are unable to maintain themselves by their labor alone that most deeply challenges modern societies and forges recognizably modern policies of social assistance.

The author's gloss on the social question also offers us valuable perspectives on contemporary debates over who should receive social assistance and whether this entitlement should be linked to the obligation to work. Castel's rich insights and brilliant generalizations are invaluable for anyone concerned with what he describes as the "new social question" of work and social welfare in contemporary society.

Robert Castel is director of studies at the �cole des Hautes �tudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. His other books include Le Psychanalysme, l'Ordre Psychiatrique, and La Gestion des Risques. The translator, Richard Boyd, is assistant professor of political science at the University of Pennsylvania, and a noted scholar of French social theory in his own right.

Not a beginner's book, but definitely useful if you want to learn how to work in the world of large-scale, reactive platforms

"Reactive web applications are designed to cope with varying loads," the author, Manuel Bernhardt, notes. "When building web applications, one critical piece of informatin that should flow into the design is the expected load in terms of requests per second that the application should be able to handle." For some applications, such as a small-town plumber's business-card-style website, this will not be much of a worry. But what if you are building a product site or social media site that may suddenly draw many thousands, or even tens of thousands, of users following a burst of online publicity? If your site can't adjust to handle the load and crashes, instead, it might "lose one of its few chances to get noticed by the general public," the author points out.

This book provides good overviews of how to create reactive web applications, and it offers numerous code examples. But it is not a beginners' book at all. "To get the most out of this book," Bernhardt cautions, "you should be a seasoned programmer and be well acquainted with at least one modern language such as Java or C#. Furthermore, you should know enough about the syntax and main concepts of Scala to read the examples in the book and implement the exercises."

You may wonder why the author chose the seemingly odd combination of Play, Akka and Scala ( with a detour into examples that use ScalaJS and AngularJS and even MongoDB). "The Play Framework," he says, "has been designed from the ground up to make it possible to build reactive web applications that are capable of providing real-time behavior to users even under high load and in a decentralized setting." He adds: "On the JVM, the only mature full-stack reactive web application framework is the Play Framework." As for Scala: "One of the main design goals of the Scala programming language is to enable developers to tackle the complexity of programming multicore and distributed systems." It takes a while for Akka's purpose to be spotlighted, but on page 114, Bernhardt finally states: "Akka is a toolkit for concurrent programming." And, one of the tools it offers is "dispatchers, which provide a way to configure diverse thread execution strategies in detail. Play uses this configuration facility to configure its own web worker pool."

Like I said, this is not a web beginner's book. But if you are planning to work, or are already working, in the growing arena of real-world, large-scale reactive platforms, definitely give "Reactive Web Applications" some good consideration. It explains and illustrates numerous concepts you will need to understand. (My thanks to Manning for providing a review copy.)

and I would like to say this is one of BEST books in ...

I bought this E-book from Manning.com. So far I have gone through it from chapter 1 to chapter 9, and I would like to say this is one of BEST books in Scala solution stack that I have read. It provides some great examples in reactive design patterns; however, this book requires the readers have some Scala knowledge or experience. And it covers how to utilize Akka in your web application although it is not a total package book of Akka. But it brings the concepts of reactive programming to the readers. If you already have some experience or knowledge in Scala, and are looking into the field of Reactive Programming. This is a great book to start. This book also clearly guides you the steps of building the applications, including adding/removing dependencies in SBT files. Overall, this is a great book and easy to use for those who know Scala.

About the Author
Cal Pritner began teaching in Kansas City public schools; after serving in the military, he earned MA and PhD degrees at the University of Illinois, Urbana. As a theatre professor he has taught at: Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville; Illinois State University (where he was the founding chair of the theatre department and the founding artistic director of the Illinois Shakespeare Festival); the University of Missouri-Kansas City (department chair), he has taught at the California Institute of the Arts and since 1994 he has taught in the California State Summer School for the Arts.

Scott Walters was Assistant to the Dean of the College of Fine Arts at Illinois State University, where he also taught in the Theatre Department. He was Chair of the Drama Dept. at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, and currently is the Program Director of the Arts and Ideas Program there, where he also teaches in the Drama Department.

Good book, but watch the price!

This is an excellent and methodical look at how one may analyse a theatrical script. BUT--watch out for the pricing of this book McGraw-Hill lists this book at $50. Amazon has it for around $34 and it seems to be going used for about $23. This is, at most, a companion text which needs copies of the analysed scripts ("Glass Menagerie," "Joe Turner's Come and Gone," "Tartuffe," and "Hamlet" to get the full effect (all parts of one of McGraw-Hill's theatre anthologies). While Amazon says that this book is 144 pages, my copy (also first edition and also published in 2005) is only 114 pages long.

Don't get me wrong--I think that this is a perfect companion to any theatre class where students are going to be required to read scripts, but I cannot in good conscience require a text that is this expensive and this short. If it was around $15, bundled with their anthology, or even provided as an appendix to one of their anthologies it would be an excellent addition to my class. As it is I'll simply put a copy on reserve in our library and suggest students use it to help with their assignments.

About the Author
Carlos Machado was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At the age of four he started his path in the martial arts, learning from his relatives the popular style known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. After attending law school in Rio, he decided to switch the "suit" for the "kimono", and teach the martial arts he fell in love with at an early age. Carlos with his four junior siblings known as the "Machado Brothers" after 20 years of teaching have been among the pioneers in the popularization of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in America. Training tens of thousands of students and spreading the art of brazillian Jiu-Jitsu in all 50 states and across the world. Today he mentors a growing number of students, spread out all over the world. Many seek his knowledge on the mat, and in his perspective on the philosophy of Jiu-Jitsu. As he simply states, "I am not here to teach martial arts, but to change people's lives!"

Excellent new selection

Carlos Machado is the highest ranked BJJ black belt in the south. Being able to read his thoughts in one well put together book is nothing less than exceptional. I highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a great motivational piece.

What a great book for anyone to read. The quotes can be applied to so many areas of your life and not just the Martial Arts. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the wisdom in Professor Machado's words.

We are all fighters in life and Grand Master Machado very eloquently shares his insights gained fighting and living for every inch, every second, every breath and every smile.

About the Author
The United States Olympic Chess Team captain in 1962, Eliot Hearst is a U.S. Life Senior Master, a distinguished professor emeritus at Indiana University, and an adjunct professor of psychology at the University of Arizona.

Do not buy this book if you want to learn to play blindfold chess

I bought this book with the hope that it would have tips and techniques for learning to play blindfold chess. The table of contents was very clear that it included a lot of other things as well (psychology, history, annotated games), but I was hoping for at least 30 or so pages on actual exercises or techniques.

I was greatly disappointed that the chapter on techniques was only 9 pages. And then my disappointment turned to shock when I realized that nearly all of those 9 pages are dedicated to the techniques that masters use to tell games apart when they play multiple simultaneous blindfolded games. There is approximately a paragraph (I'm not joking!) about some techniques people use to play blindfolded chess:

1) Get really good at understanding the light squares vs. the dark squares. Some people memorize a quarter of the board, since the pattern is the same for all quadrants.
2) Mentally practice moving specific pieces around, such as hopping a knight around the board etc.

If you're a chess historian, you would probably like this book. But the cover specifically mentions techniques - and for that, it is simply terrible.

I bought this book a few months after it came out. Now, seeing the scarce reviews after all that time, I felt compelled to add to the record. It is a prodigious piece of work that goes into great detail on all aspects of blindfold chess by top chess players. I do not think it s a book for the rank amateur who barely knows the moves or someone looking for the secret sauce of playing blindfolded. As an average rated USCF member and someone who had been roundly beaten more than once by a friend (2000 rating) who could play 3 boards blindfolded and normally beat me 80% of the time, I was fascinated by the history of blindfold chess, the records being set, and the controversies surrounding some of them. As I read the book, I could recall my own efforts at blindfold chess and realized that the degree of detail I could visualize had been OK; I did not have to have a photographic memory and maybe I gave up to soon at trying to play blindfolded. This is a book for those who love chess and its history, a book to savor slowly and reread and to pass on to future generations.

This is one of my favorite chess books, and in terms of its useful information on how to improve, it to me is the best chess book ever written. Valuable insights and quotes from the masters like Reti, Koltanowski and World Champion Lasker are given in this fascinating gem of a book. For the serious student, worth every penny.

This book pulls together in a single, extensively referenced volume, the three different but related topics of automotive fuels, fuel additives, and engines, and shows how all three areas work together. It includes a brief history of automotive fuels development, followed by chapters on automotive fuels manufacture from crude oil and other fossil sources. One chapter is dedicated to the manufacture of automotive fuels and fuel blending components from renewable sources. The safe handling, transport, and storage of fuels, from all sources, are covered. New combustion systems to achieve reduced emissions and increased efficiency are discussed, and the way in which the fuels' physical and chemical characteristics affect these combustion processes and the emissions produced are included. There is also discussion on engine fuel system development and how these different systems affect the corresponding fuel requirements. Because the book is for a global market, fuel system technologies that only exist in the legacy fleet in some markets are included. The way in which fuel requirements are developed and specified is discussed. This covers test methods from simple laboratory bench tests, through engine testing, and long-term test procedures.

In this lucid and impassioned critique of the work of Harvard University professor Cornel West, Mark David Wood examines West's philosophy of prophetic pragmatism. Creatively combining elements of Christianity, pragmatism, and Marxism, West has articulated a liberationist 'theology of the streets' that seeks to expand freedom and democracy throughout society. Indeed, West has become one of the most publicly influential black intellectuals in the United States and contributed significantly to the development of the progressive pragmatist political tradition. Wood evaluates the political consequences of a shift in West's position from an earlier, revolutionary socialist stance to a later, progressive reformist one. In his early writings, West condemned capitalism as antidemocratic and contended that struggles against racism must be advanced as part of an international working-class movement against capitalism.Wood shows how West's subsequent reworking of Marxism supports his transition from a socialist to a progressivist politics. No longer arguing for public control of social production, West now identifies the major enemy of black survival as nihilism and seeks to expand democracy within the boundaries of capitalist property relations in the United States. In criticizing West's post-Marxist tendencies to downplay deep structural antagonisms, avoid class-struggle, and abandon internationalism, Wood counters that struggles for ecological integrity, human rights, and social justice should be explicitly linked to the goal of socializing production to satisfy human needs and support universal individuation. His critique constitutes an important contribution to the development of a perspective that aims to enable U.S. workers and their allies to build a global society that is genuinely democratic.

About the Author

Kim Bartel Sheehan is a Professor and Director of the Master’s Program in Strategic Communication and the Undergraduate Honors Program at the School of Communication and Journalism at the University of Oregon. She held leadership positions at agencies in Boston, Chicago, and St. Louis and has consulted with numerous companies. Her research involves advertising, culture, and new technology, with a focus on sustainability communications. She has published extensively about online privacy, advertising ethics, and direct-to-consumer prescription drug advertising. She has served as an Associate Editor and a Special Issue Editor for the Journal of Advertising and President of the American Academy of Advertising. Sheehan won the School of Journalism and Communication’s Marshall Award for Innovative Teaching in 2001 and 2010. She is currently a Fellow for the Society of New Communications Research and has been a two-time Page Legacy Scholar and two-time Dave and Nancy Petrone Faculty Fellow.

Skip it, its an agenda in poor disguise.

If you find yourself wondering what is happening on college campuses lately, and why current college students are so incredibly coddled. This book is a good example. Its full of reasoning like "In this ad, you can see that the man is clearly taller than the woman. Thus he is in a position of power over her". The prologue is two pages of explaining and apologizing for being American centric.

If you're looking for great resources for the classroom or elsewhere, skip it. Find something that doesn't have an agenda dripping from every page (right OR left).

Whether one is a tourist, amateur historian, or just a fan of documentary film, this presentation is highly interesting

I'm thoroughly impressed with this video lecture. The European history which I knew in outline form is brought to life in this video. I'm now on episode 6 and look forward to seeing more.
To begin with, I appreciate the dramatic history of early Lithuania. A land of heroes, the country faced long odds and powerful rivals on its western and eastern borders. On its west, Lithuania and the coastal region of Zemaitija was being overrun by a rogue order of Teutonic Knights, and on its east the Tatars or Mongols had conquered Ukraine. Amazingly, the Lithuanian tribes united, formed the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and liberated both western and eastern regions from oppression. This is all told in vivid detail, in a way that only the best professors do well.
The speaker moves swiftly through a range of geography and time. Whether you are continuing research about Eastern Europe or looking for new jumping off points in one's learning this video series is a hit.
