No respect for Maple 'Document' mode
By Chris Morgan
This book completely ignores the very impressive 'document' mode in Maple. Thompson agues for the use of the 'workbook' mode of entry instead. As a new user of Maple I have found the document mode to be a more natural and reliable way to enter equations. The visual representation is very reinforcing, compared to the workbook method. Having said that, if you like the Maple workbook mode of entry, then this would be an excellent resource for you.

Living History: A Memoir, by Chaim Herzog

Freedom fighter, army general, Israeli ambassador to the United Nations during the turbulent '70s, president of Israel from 1983 to 1993--Chaim Herzog's life has paralleled the life of Israel itself. Now he gives readers a candid and acutely observant account of that life in all its historic and personal richness. Uniquely qualified to put a human face on history, Herzog provides insights into the people with whom he has played a part in the creation of that history. b&w photos.

Amazon.com Review
Chaim Herzog, former UN ambassador for Israel and President of the Jewish state from 1983 to 1993, who was born and raised in Ireland, where his father was Chief Rabbi, was present at the birth of the state of Israel. He served in the British Army during the Second World War, and helped liberate the Nazi concentration camps, a profoundly moving experience for a Jewish officer. Afterwards he fought in Israel's war of independence. In the UN Herzog made eloquent speeches in defense of Israel at a time when his country was increasingly isolated. His presidency saw the beginning of the Intifada, the missions to rescue Ethiopia's Falasha Jews, and the opening up of the Soviet Union. In this extensive memoir Herzog offers his memories and reflections, including comments on the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin.

From Publishers Weekly
Herzog, twice president of Israel (1983-93), has written an exhilarating autobiography, at once a stirring personal and political testament to some of this century's major events. Born in Belfast in 1918 to a Latvian mother and a Polish father who was chief rabbi of Ireland, he moved with his family to Palestine in 1935 and at 16 joined the Haganah, the underground resistance led by David Ben-Gurion. Receiving his higher education in London, Herzog, then a young barrister, joined the British army as soon as Britain declared war on Hitler, and he was part of the first Allied formation to cross into Germany, where he subsequently witnessed the horrors of the newly liberated Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. He fought in Israel's war for independence, and as director of Israel's military intelligence molded it into one of the best organizations of its kind. As Israel's ambassador to the UN, he valiantly fought against the 1974 resolution sponsored by what he calls "those three great bulwarks of democracy," Cuba, Somalia and Benin, equating Zionism with racism (a resolution revoked by a large majority in 1991). As Israeli president Herzog maneuvered behind the scenes to forge a coalition government and helped shape Israel's response to growing unemployment and drug use, the intifada, the Gulf War and Iraqi Scud missile attacks. Sprinkled with his brutally candid assessments of Golda Meir, Shimon Peres, Moshe Dayan, Kurt Waldheim, Reagan, Arafat and others, his memoir ends on an optimistic note, envisaging a genuine Middle East peace that could facilitate joint Israel-Arab economic and technical cooperation. From Library Journal
In this fascinating memoir, Herzog, the president of Israel from 1983 to 1993 and the author of The Arab-Israeli Wars (1984), reflects on his life from his childhood in Dublin?where his father was chief rabbi of Ireland?to the present. Especially absorbing are his chapters devoted to the Six Day War, the Yom Kippur War, and his role as Israeli ambassador to the United Nations during the turbulent Seventies. In a concluding chapter, Herzog is critical of Benjamin Netanyahu for his alleged encouragement of extreme opposition to the Rabin government in the year immediately preceding the prime minister's assassination. While much of Herzog's book is descriptive rather than analytical, it remains a remarkable record of one of the leaders of the 20th century. Well recommended for all collections.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
By A Customer
Chaim Herzog will always be remembered in my heart as the man who defended Israel's rights on and against the world's stage; the United Nations. I would like to transcribe for you a direct quote from his speech on October 17, 1975, when the UN was about to formally vote on institutionalizing the notion of "Zionism is racism":
__________
"We have listened to the most unbelievable nonsense on the issue of Zionism and from whom? From countries who are the archetypes of racism.
...How dare you talk of racism to us, we who suffered more than any other nation in the world from racist theories and practices, a nation which has suffered the most terrifying holocaust in the history of mankind.
...This is a sad day for the United Nations. The Jewish people will not forget this scene nor this vote.
We are a small people with a proud history. We have lived through much in our history.
We shall survive this shameful exhibition, . . . and I thank the delegations who have expressed themselves against this pernicious resolution. We shall not forget those who voted to attack our religion and our faith. We shall never forget."
__________
Of course, his entire memoir is not written out as angry as he was when his role was as Israel's ambassador to the UN, but his writings are just as passionate.
For anyone interested in the history of the modern state of Israel, this is a must read. He was there at just about every important turn and twist; (British intelligence officer in) World War II, Israel's War of Independence, at David Ben-Gurion's side, the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War, the "Zionism is Racism" debate, and as the president of Israel for ten years -- through a national unity government and the Intifada.
Simply an amazing life.

A wonderful read
By Seth J. Frantzman
A wonderful autobiography of Israeli statesman, diplomat, spymaster and politician, Chaim Herzog. Chaim Herzog was among a very fascinating family that included the Chief Rabbi of Israel in the 40s. Chaim himself served in numerous posts, finally becoming President of Israel in the 80s. This narrative covers every aspect of Israeli history from its high points to its low ones. Chaim has been central to every major event in Israeli history, from the siege of Jerusalem in 1948 to the Ethiopian airlift. His smart, to the point, autobiography pulls no punches in its incisive critique of Israeli society today and the mirror of the past. For instance he takes to task such luminaries as Golda and Dayan, while criticizing the rise of `fundamentalism' in Israeli society, painting a not so pretty picture of today's Yeshiva attitude towards serving in the IDF. He explains how the Rabbinate was actually more liberal in the 1940s then it is today. This is a wonderful tour de force on Israeli history, from someone who was central to Israeli policy for year. Not an apologists account, Chaim equally praises Ariel Sharon for his Unit 101 strategies as well as Peres for his inventive ideas. Probably no one in modern Israeli society could be so unbiased as to see the vital gifts that both Sharon and Peres have given to Israel. A must read for anyone interested in Israel or the modern political situation in the middle east.

An amazing person & story.
By A Customer
I met Chaim Herzog in 1996, after the publication of his book and just before his death. I knew that he was one of Israel's formost warriors/statesmen, but of his life in between, well, I realized that I knew nothing indeed about him until I began to read his memoir.
The title "Living History" is perfect in all its sense. It's a fascinating account of his and modern Israel's story.

An Introduction to the Visual System, by Martin J. Tovée

Building on the successful formula of the first edition, Martin Tove offers a concise but detailed account of how the visual system is organised and functions to produce visual perception. He takes his readers from first principles; the structure and function of the eye and what happens when light enters, to how we see and process images, recognise patterns and faces, and through to the most recent discoveries in molecular genetics and brain imaging, and how they have uncovered a host of new advances in our understanding of how visual information is processed within the brain. Incorporating new material throughout, including almost 50 new images, every chapter has been updated to include the latest research, and culminates in helpful key points, which summarise the lessons learnt. This book is an invaluable course text for students within the fields of psychology, neuroscience, biology and physiology.

A VERY GOOD introduction to the visual system
By Adam Ginton
For what it claims it is, namely, "an introduction," Tovee's book provides a comprehensive, clear, and easy-to-understand tour through the start to end of our visual system.

Overall, if you are looking for an informative, yet entertaining as opposed to overly pedagogical introduction into how our visual system works, this is the book to go with. The manner it goes about teaching is lucid and easy to follow; it begins with any preliminary explanations before moving onto the successive topic, starting with how light and the eye works (actually how we can know all these things) up to how the brain processes information and the consequential effects. Thus, the reader should not feel as there are any major gaps in his understanding of the material. With that said, this is just an introduction, and so as opposed to a college textbook, which tries to explain as much as possible about as much as possible, this book sticks to the more general ideas. For example, it does explain the general structure of cells and photoreceptors, but as opposed to some college textbooks I've read, it doesn't go into the atomic or genetic explanation of how everything is made (it does mention the major proteins that are used but only in name and general function). The essential details are mentioned, as well as the essential details in explaining the essential details. Or in another way of putting it, all the essential details to neuroscience are mentioned. Further, the language and tone is casual and easy-to-approach; Tovee does not merely regurgitate facts and expect you to memorize them all. Rather, he always gives clear examples of what something means and entails. Thus every idea becomes easily conceptual to understand.

The book follows a logical progression of how our visual experience works:
1. It beneficially begins by giving an account of the analysis methods we have used to determine all this information, that is, it lets you know how and why we know what we know. It also gives a very brief, overall picture of the gross anatomical structures of the brain.
2. Gross anatomy of the eye and what parts do what. It also mentions related phenomena to the subject, such as what eye-disorders happen if something goes wrong.
3. The genetics and theories of colour vision - how and why we can see.
4. An overview of the major parts of the visual system in the brain and what each area generally does, as well as how the areas function and communicate with each other and overall.
5. A more detailed description of the Primary Visual Cortex.
6. Visual Development - the biological effects of various nurturing scenarios.
7. The Colour constancy problem - what it is, possible explanations, and possible repercussions
8. Object Perception and recognition - from the technical details of the image on the retina to how it is processed/encoded by the cells and brain areas. Also related subtopics and problems under object perception
9. Facial recognition - why it is particularly important and how it works.
10. Motion perception
11. Brain and Space - the makeup/constituents of a visual image
12. A summary of it all, as well as more repercussions/problems still faced
Further, each chapter has a very concise summary of the key points.

Although there are lucid, easily-conceptual explanations of phenomena, not many details are overly emphasized, whether or not they are particularly important. That is, the author mentions them once in a thorough account, but does not mention the particular importance of a subject. For example, the idea of ocular dominance is mentioned only briefly, despite the larger importance of such a theory. Still, one has to give credit in the authors illuminating explanation of not just technical anatomy but also discussion of the related-phenomena of something. For example, he devotes several pages to describing the mechanics and effects of monocular/binocular deprivation. In making topics relatable, there are many interesting studies mentioned and the important consequential ideas of such studies. For example, in chapter 2 it is mentioned that one suggestion as to why we do not notice our blinks is that visual perception is suppressed during a blink. The author continues, "Evidence for this suggestion comes from an ingenious experiment by Volkman and his colleagues. The eyes lie directly above the roof of the mouth, and a bright light shone on the roof will stimulate the retina whether or not the eyes are closed. Volkman found that the light intensity required to stimulate the retina during a blink is five times greater than at any other time, strongly suggesting that there is suppression of perception during blinking." Most helpfully, the author in bringing up a new topic first gives the general definition of something, then what it means in more exact ideas, and then the technical reasons for why it happens, and finally implications and/or problems that arise. For example, on p. 39, "In 1802, Thomas Young correctly proposed that the human eye detected different colours because it contained three types of receptor, each sensitive to a particular hue. His theory was reffered to as the trichromatic (three colour) theory. It suggested that for a human observer any colour could be reproduced by various quantities of three colours selected from various points in the spectrum, such as red green, and blue. However, it has long been thought that there are four primary colours: red, green, blue, and yellow." He then goes on to a more thorough explanation of these theories. The pages are filled with illuminating diagrams of the important details just described. I personally find these sorts of diagrams more helpful/informative than just a photo taken from real life, as the labels are very helpful to me, although there are NO actual pictures taken from real life in the book. What I like most is the flow of ideas mentioned, especially in introducing an idea. For example, "the P pathway [with information about colour and shape] splits to produce two new pathways in the upper layers of V1. One pathway seems to deal primarily with colour and this is called the P-B pathway," which is followed by a more detailed description of the pathways.

I would say this is a must-have for anyone interested in neuroscience and the visual system at any level. Whether for the dilettante who wants to have a general yet comprehensive understanding of how our visual experience works, to the student who needs a concise conceptualization of things, to anyone who wants to just reinforce this material. This book is best read in a chronological manner, as topics don't necessarily build off one another (as in, you need to have read the preceding information to understand the current information), but rather just flawlessly follows from one another. By reading in this manner, it is easier to see the function and importance of a topic. However, one can turn to any page and get a helpful understanding of something (for example, upon turning to a random page, I read, "Althouh many neurons in V1 do respond to lines and bars, the optimal stimulus is a sine-wave grating (De Valois, Albrecht & Thorell, 1978). A sine-wave grating looks like a series of fuzzy, unfocused parallel bars. Along any line perpendicular to the long axis of the grating, the brightness varies according to a sine-wave fuction."). Plus, at only 179 pages, with many pictures in between, it is a pleasantly short, easy-to-read book.

An Excellent Overview of Sight
By Martin A. Gantt
An Introduction to the Visual System was exactly as advertised. The relatively quick read provides an overview of the entire visual system of the brain. The book begins with a detailed description of the physiology of the eyes and the relevant physical and biochemical functional structures. The optical physics and photochemistry are glossed over in favor of giving the reader a slightly broader systems view of the eyes. Color vision is discussed in detail discussing the way three types of human cones allow for color vision. The biochemical properties of photopigments are glossed over in favor of a broader perspective. The evolutionary basis of color vision and problems arising in color defects are briefly explained.
The text next discusses the organization of the visual system in a very broad sense. Cortical localization and the anatomy of visual organization are discussed with emphasis on the primary visual cortex. The modular organization of the primary visual cortex is emphasized, discussing cortical receptive fields, color vision, directionality, texture, based on the modular organization of the primary visual cortex.
The remainder of the text discusses higher level visual functions. Development of the neural system is discussed in detail citing numerous animal studies of monocular and binocular deprivation. A chapter is devoted to the complex task of maintaining color constancy. Various studies are cited demonstrating the very complex nature of organizing a system of cortical neurons, some wavelength dependent and others "color context" dependent in order to use color recognition of objects for our benefit.
The higher level brain functions of object perception and recognition and motion were especially fascinating. Citing various studies the author seems to suggest that complex higher cortical regions of the brain have large cortical receptive fields that integrate lower level cortical processing to respond to specific types of objects. "It has been suggested that the simple shapes coded for by the elaborate cells can form a `visual alphabet' from which a representation of an object can be constructed" (p.130). This proposition has tremendous implications for the study of visual perception if not consciousness itself.
The discussion of motion processing the visual system in equally engrossing. The techniques of saccades, (rapid movement of the eye) stereoscoping (using differences in each eyes perception to create depth perception) and the organization of directional modularity in the V5 section of the brain provide neural basis for generating what the author refers to as "The illusion of continuity".
An entire chapter is devoted the perception of the face. A seemingly trivial matter, the author explains through the use of PET scan and fMRI evidence that the primate brain really has sections and pathways devoted towards face recognition. The evolutionary significance of face recognition is briefly but effectively explained.
The book ends a discussion of how the brain is able to integrate the multitude of complex processes into image formation. Neural oscillation and temporal binding theory are discussed , although the author seems to personally favor a more hierarchal organizing model.
Overall the book is an excellent read for anyone interested in neuroscience, optics, or medicine. The book doesn't get bogged down in technical details in is very concise. Most of the information and claims presentation and supported with a plethora of references to neuroscience experiments. Perhaps best of all each chapter ends with a bullet point summary of the key concepts. I highly recommend this book.
