Sadly, history has left us few classical martial texts. Due partly to the Chinese scholar class’ disdain for all things physically demanding, there were few literate warriors to preserve the martial techniques of antiquity in ‘songs’. This, compounded with constant upheaval, and the passing of time have left us with very few extant historical texts on Chinese sword such as ‘Fundamentals of the Wudang Sword Method’. This makes accurately translating such writings quite the daunting task.

Fortunately, we now have this work from one such ‘literate warrior’. While there are translations of sword manuals, very few are by those who have ‘walked the walk’. Rodell Laoshi’s teachings and influence can be seen the world over and is arguably responsible for the renaissance of historical Chinese sword combat training. Rarely does a martial author surface that possesses such a comprehensive understanding of the actual techniques presented in a classical work prior to translating it.

Social upheaval, sophisticated arts, and why swords are relevant

The author/translator, Scott M. Rodell, is a present-day expert on the usage and history of traditional Chinese swords and other related arms, as well as the full martial curriculum of Yang Taijiquan (Tai Chi). Many students seek him out specifically for this expertise and he regularly tours internationally to teach sword-work and Yang Taijiquan seminars. Comprehensive traditional martial arts schools of any kind are uncommon today—especially such schools teaching Taijiquan. Specifically within the Yang lineages of Taijiquan, the number of world-wide schools with authentic lineage with a full-contact and valid martial system are exceedingly rare.

An even more dire situation confronts traditional, authentic Chinese sword knowledge. If Taijiquan is endangered of soon disappearing as a properly maintained martial tradition, historical Chinese swordsmanship is already on its death-bed, perhaps to disappear forever in the coming generation. Hence Rodell’s significant role here as a living source on a subject nearly forgotten to modernity. Naturally this loss of sword experts has been compounded by recent generations left with no deep understanding of realistic swordplay dynamics, the often misunderstood context of the weapon's usage within Chinese and greater history, and (perhaps most dangerous of all) a chaotic, overwhelming modern information age without any enforced quality standards of knowledge.

It's worth considering whether our potentially fractious oncoming era has analogous or parallel resonance with the turbulent socio-political backdrop of early 20th century China, where began the ambitious military career of sword master Li Jinglin. Li’s verses on Chinese swordsmanship study and development are the focus of Rodell's translation and commentary. There's poignancy here given sword's precarious historical preservation in both eras. The historical backdrop is fascinating, though it's the collaboration of his brisk sword verses in context with Scott M. Rodell's expanded commentary which adequately conveys Li's sometimes terse instructions across disparate time periods.

It offers significant value for students of martial arts with internal work, by demonstrating how to re-apply serious internal development to further progress by sword training, and also ought to help in the modern lack of knowledge regarding sword arts. That this understanding is so rare to modern traditions ironically re-affirms why the symbol of the sword is enshrined romantically across our cultures, and why sword mastery has value in continued preservation: it fosters a sophistication of character and skill that ultimately can be used to temper violence. A gold mine of insights into historical swordsmanship

This new book by Scott M. Rodell is a gold mine of insights into historical swordsmanship. Rodell's expert translations are based on over 30 years of practical sword experience. My favorite is the sequence of training, where he talks about the different steps required for solo practice first and and sword play second. This book does not contain specific sword techniques, I recommend also getting his other book, "Chinese Swordsmanship," which is an encyclopedia of techniques and forms for both the public and Michuan Taiji sword systems.

Very Informative

Patricia has done an excellent job of laying out Biblical principles for an abundant life. I was blessed by every chapter and the activations at the end. She includes her book Decree at the end. I highly recommend as she stated believing and proclaiming the word of God. His word does not return void, it accomplishes all it is sent out to do!

All in all, this is an excellent book that is well worth the price. Many times, I found myself putting the book down to go to the computer and follow up on an idea or product. It should be noted, however, that readers should be careful in their approach. Fun With Superglue and other segments dealing with fake ID's could get you in significant trouble for little benefit. One of the most valuable aspects of this book was that it made me think about practical aspects of Freedom and Revolution. At what point do we, as Freedom-Loving Americans, get off the couch and take the steps necessary to remove an irrevocably corrupt government? This book will open your mind and expand your horizons.

Must have

I haven't read the book yet but based on all of Wolfe's writings I know this is a great book. I can't stop laughing about her novel Hardyville - it will actually bring tears to your eyes. I had to order several copies of this book because when I showed people the Intro they wanted this book. People are hungry for the truth and I think it will deliver. Anyway, thumbs up and stars all around.

Claire Wolfe's writing style runs right up my alley since I love a good sense of humor and wry wit. I addition to being informative you will laugh out loud at her tips on how to protect your privacy among a myriad of other things. I have read several of her books--totally love "The Hardyville Tales"--and have never been disappointed by her.

Thomas L. Norman, CPP, PSP, CSC, is an internationally acclaimed security risk management and enterprise-class security system design consultant with experience in the United States, the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Mr. Norman has experience in security designs for critical infrastructure including oil and gas terminals, lines, and distribution centers; mass transit and vehicle transportation systems including air security, rail, and marine facilities and systems; long-span suspension and truss bridges; and central banking, utility and financial facilities. Mr. Norman’s extended experience includes a large number of chemical, petrochemical, banking, government, corporate facilities, hospitality, healthcare, venues, and museums.

Mr. Norman’s unique processes focus on identifying and securing the underlying causes of building system vulnerabilities, that is, business processes, technologies, and cultures that encourage the development of vulnerabilities to the detriment of the organization. Excellent book on electronic security systems

This is probably the best overall book on electronic security systems, not just access control systems. It also provides a very good overview on access portals-doors, gates, etc. I am a CPP and completed the US Army Corps of Engineers electronic security systems school, so I had some good context from which to understand and evaluate this book. Highly recommended for anyone responsible for designing, purchasing, administering, or just wanting to understand access control systems, alarms, video surveillance, or related security systems.

Electronic Security is the Future!

i am an installer, and this book is very methodical in every-way, there is something in this book for everyone, if your into electronic security, don't miss this book.....its detailed and expressed so that one can get a grasp on the technology....some parts are complicated in itself with technology but that's what technology is at times complicated....if you want a job for the next twenty years, get into this business!....i work for a large company that installs, access controls systems and you'd be surprised and some of the creations that go into this stuff, what customers ask for.

Good text for someone entering the field.

This is a nice methodical approach to introducing someone to the basics of Electronic Access Control. I am an industry veteran with over 31 years experience in all aspects of the field. Even though the book was published in 2011 it is already somewhat dated in certain areas. That is not an indictment of the book or the author, it is the rapid moving nature of the business. The only area of the book that I take strong exception to is the chapter on Life Safety and Exit Devices, specifically what Mr. Norman refers to as his opinion of the best way to accomplish fire alarm interface. In my 31 years of design, installation and implementation of fire alarm and access control systems I have never seen fire alarm interface (commonly referred to as "Fire Alarm Override") accomplished in the way that is described in the book, and I would strongly recommend against doing it in that manner. There are far more sophisticated and effective ways to accomplish this in today's world. Other than that I like it, and have recommended it for the text in a class that I am teaching.

Becky Edwards is a teacher who has specialized in teaching autistic children. She lives in Chichester, England, with her husband and two children.

His most well-known books are the Light House Keeper books, which are published by Scholastic and have been in print for over twenty years. David divides his time between fine art, illustrating, and publishing the schools magazine Aquilla. He lives in Sussex, England.

My son has sensory processing issues. He this book home from the preschool library and refused to return it. So we bought our own. The words are simple, the emotions are real and story is meaningful. Our entire family relates to some aspect of the book.

Sweet book, great for a sibling of an autistic child.

My autistic son brought this book home from the school library today (he's mainstreamed in Kindergarten and his brother is in 1st grade at the same school). I read it to them at bedtime and got choked up trying to get through it. It is very touching and sweet and offers a great answer to the question of how to get your autistic little brother to play with you. I really enjoyed it and plan to purchase it for our home library.
