The subtitle of this monumental collection refers to the home (Lookout Farm) that Hemingway owned in Cuba from 1939 to 1959. That time frame accounts for most of the short fiction, published and unpublished, that followed the major collection issued in 1938, The First Forty-Nine. There are 60 stories in all. Of the 21 not included in the 1938 collection, the seven heretofore unpublished pieces will interest readers most. Three are especially good. "A Train Trip" and "The Porter" are self-contained excerpts from an abandoned novel that match in tone and appeal the early Hemingway work in which he explored the adolescent sensibility exposed to an adult world that is exciting but at the same time threatening and morally complex. Drawing from the author's experiences in Europe during World War II, "Black Ass at the Crossroads" is excellent in its detailing of violent action, portraying an ambush of German soldiers from the point of view of an American infantry officer, depressed and angry over the suffering he has inflicted in the course of battle. The other previously unpublished pieces include a Spanish Civil War story reminiscent of Hemingway's play, The Fifth Column; two quite touching stories about a father's disappointments with a troubled son; and a long section comprising four chapters from an early version of the novel, Islands in the Stream. Intrinsically readable, the collection is also significant in drawing together much that was unavailable or difficult to access.

A thoughtfully arranged, comprehensive edition of Hemingway's short fiction justifies publication. This is not it. At best, it offers convenience rather than creativity or even completeness: it omits five stories published two years ago. It reprints the "the first 49" stories (1938), adds 14 subsequently published, and appends seven hitherto unpublished. What is lacking is a fresh reordering of the storiesthematic, chronological, or stylistic. Further, three of the unpublished pieces are not stories but excerpts from novels. None of the new material is artistically significant. Yet each bears the hallmark of Hemingway's geniuswhich will survive even this. Arthur Waldhorn, City Coll.,

About the Author
Ernest Hemingway did more to influence the style of English prose than any other writer of his time. Publication of The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms immediately established him as one of the greatest literary lights of the 20th century. His classic novella The Old Man and the Sea won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953. Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. He died in 1961.

Hemingway Complete Works

What more can be said about Ernest Hemingway? I enjoy his clear writing style and engaging characters. My husband and I were traveling to Key West and wanted to read some Hemingway before we visited the Hemingway museum, but I’m not great at getting through novels quickly so this book was an accessible way for me to read some of his works before our trip.
It is a little bulky and the pages are thin - but that is to be expected for a complete works - I did decide to leave it at home for our trip though. This book isn’t something you will sit down and read straight through unless you are a major Hemingway fan. I suspect one might get bored if they try since Hemingway tends to stick to the same themes over and over again. However, it will be great to pick up and read a few stories every now and again.
I got this book used, and it was in the condition described - I’m completely satisfied with my purchase and am glad to have this one on my shelf!

Worthwhile Collection

The core of this three-part collection is "The First Forty-nine", a compilation of stories that Hemingway selected and published in 1938. While the first four stories in Part I--including the famous `The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber' and `The Snows of Kilimanjaro'--were new to this collection, Hemingway cherry-picked the remaining 45 stories in Part I from "Three Stories and Ten Poems" (1923), "In Our Time" (1925 and 1930), "Men Without Women" (1927), and "Winner Take Nothing" (1933). Meanwhile, Part II has 14 stories that Hem published in books and magazines subsequent to "The First Forty-nine". Finally, Part III contains six stories unpublished in Hem's lifetime and that first appeared in this Finca Vigia Edition.

There are some tremendous stories in this collection. My favorites are `The Undefeated' (from MWW), `A Way You'll Never Be' (from WTN), and `One Trip Across' (incorporated into "To Have and To Have Not"). These are stories everyone should read. I particularly liked `One Trip Across' where Hem, in the first-person, writes a great fishing and crime story while working with his characteristic themes of grace under pressure, honor, and sudden death. Here's a snippet, with Harry Morgan drifting in Havana's harbor:

"Well, I killed the engine and climbed up forward to have a look around. All there was to see was the two smacks off to the westward headed in, and way back the dome of the Capitol standing up white out of the edge of the sea. There was some gulfweed on the stream and a few birds working but not many. I sat up there awhile on top of the house and watched..."

In the spirit of full disclosure, I acknowledge reading less than half of the 69 stories in this collection. This I attribute to the best-selling Hem who, in 1938, certainly wanted another book out there. And in cherry-picking previously published stories, he created a collection that, while reflective of his themes, jumps from this to that. Of course, the man made a good living, partly by publishing short stories in magazines, where he certainly endeavored to keep his readers guessing about what he would do next. Even so, I bet the stories read with greater cohesion in the original books. This approach, at minimum, might give greater oomph to the inter-chapter sketches that Hem borrowed from "In Our Time". In this collection, these seem random and fragmented.

Following this line of thought, it might also be fun to read "The Nick Adams Stories". While this is a posthumous and fabricated volume, it does enable the reader to follow an interesting character from a heartland upbringing, to war and trauma, and to his own experience of fatherhood. Otherwise, these stories are scattered.

Don't get me wrong; this is a worthwhile collection. But doesn't it compromise the guy's work?

Nice complete short story collection from Hemingway

Hemingway has a style of writing that transcends generations. This is a nice complete short story collection.

I had read somewhere that much of Hemingway's early works were lost by his wife at that time on a train trip to meet him. She not only lost the original copies but the carbons as well. What a travesty. I would love to have read a complete collection of ALL of his works, but at least we have what came after that loss.

From a poor country...

I believe this book to be a very serious effort for understanding the realities of development. From a historical point of view, it is well researched and informative. Maybe repetitive at times, but I do not complain about this, as sometimes repetitions help to clarify some aspects. I agree with most of the arguments exposed in the book.
Having the experience of working (years ago) in the coordination between my govt and the USAID for the implementation of projects, mainly infrastructure, but also projects with the private sector, I felt that the economists and staff working for the USAID were good intentioned people and really wanted to help our country. But that was the people directly involved with the projects and that was the years when, what we call "the Washington Consensus" today , was starting to develop as an economic world view to be imposed on us.
That being said, my opinion is that the book is very accurate in its analysis and its conclusions. Reading this book is a must, if you are interested in the "problems" of development and want to compare alternatives different from the discourse of the neo-classical economists.
I do not believe that the neo-classical (or the Washington Consensus) model failed. I think that the results they were getting, were exactly what the global elites wanted. They pursued a new kind of colonialism and they were on target. Terrible results for poor countries, but a success for the people behind the scheme.
As a final comment, after this book was written a new crisis developed and the issue of inequality has taken the front row, as evidence that not only the poor countries are being harmed...We still have a lot to see...live and learn!

Very Thought-Provoking Rejection of Free Trade for Development

In "How Rich Countries Got Rich and Why Poor Countries Stay Poor," Erik Reinert resuscitates and refines the infant-industry argument for developing countries' protecting their industries. Rather than just accept what a poor country is (relatively) good at doing--often mining or subsistence agriculture--the nation should choose among activities that are likely to grow more productive in the future. Such industries are often manufacturing- and technology-based modern industries, which will help usher in a productive economy and reduce poverty. This is a very old argument which has simultaneously been rejected in the world policy community--in favor of free trade ("globalization")--and revived in academic economics (especially by Stanford's Paul Romer, sure to win the Nobel Prize within the next 5 years for his work).

Reinert convinces us of his perspective via numerous examples--old and new, successful and unsuccessful--of economies whose best path involved protecting an industry it wants to develop and letting it mature. Post-1960 South Korea in steel and cars, post-1990 Ireland in information technology, etc.

Reinert's focus on choosing industrial activity with great potential for productivity growth--rather than just any modernization--is key. Unfortunately, many development projects have failed exactly because they ushered in "modernization" through introduction of capital--dams, machinery--without any of the positive feedbacks ("synergies") that allow productivity to grow rapidly.

As important and convincing as this work is, we should take Reinert's recommendations with a grain of salt: Choosing the right sectors in which to pour resources is easier said than done. Everyone attributed Japan's economic miracle to it--at least up until 1990 when the economy imploded. Should a very poor country try to jump all the way to modernity, or develop in a number of steps that are more manageable and more appropriate given the level of education in the country? How should the country coordinate education, intellectual property, and other policies with its industrial policy?

These caveats aside, Reinert provides a great read, lots of examples of successful industrial policy based on increasing returns, and a good historical/theoretical background.

An Impressive Case

When you feel the need to write a book that essentially says, "I'm right and everyone else is wrong," it helps to have a cogent argument, because no one likes a know-it-all. This book does, but be forewarned: this is not easy-going for the average reader. If you don't know who Adam Smith, Thorstein Veblen, Joseph Schumpeter or John Maynard Keynes are, or you have only passing affinity for Karl Marx or David Ricardo, you might want to read Robert Heilbroner's "Worldly Philiosphers" book before you attempt this one (or at least have it handy for reference). What this book essentially says is that for rich countries to be espousing "free trade" as the manner by which all poor countries will lift themselves out of their poverty is the worst kind of hypocritical demagoguery the world has seen in a while; in other words, these hotheads who are protesting against the WTO or Wall Street basically have the right idea but are misguided only in their methods of showing it. "Do as I say; not as I did," the parent while chain-smoking lectures his or her skeptical offspring on the evils and health-consequences of tobacco, by way of commonplace metaphor.
Packed with plenty of quotes from past economists who don't get much air time or respect today, personal anecdotes and footnotes galore, this is not to be a book to be missed, even if you don't end up agreeing with the writer. Also a very well-proofed manuscript; I found one sentence at the end of page 199 lacking a verb (but still making sense) and a close parenthesis on page 257 without a precedent but that was it.

Hardcore description of how and why molecules move and react

An ideal reference for those intimate with the field of reacting and non-reacting "fluids". This is not a text-book for those faint-of-heart when it comes to mathematics and "techno-babble", but rather a comprehensive treatment of physical properties and interactions that govern gaseous and liquid phase molecules.

"Molecular Theory of Gases and Liquids" is unique in its cross-disciplinary approach to each aspect of molecular phenomena. Chemists, Physicists, and Engineers alike will find its content, the corresponding discussions, and at least one of the various approaches to the derivation of each concept invaluable.

Most disciplines have a text that is casually refered to as its "bible". As a physical chemist studying the interactions of high- temperature reacting fluid flows, (a glorified way of saying combustion), I heartily recommend "Molecular Theory of Gases and Liquids" to that status.

Brilliant!

This novella was a surprise and a treasure from the first page to the last. Author Mara Li has written a psychological suspense/romance/young adult story that will cause the reader to ponder what he or she would do in certain situations. The protagonist, Juliet Cunningham, is put into one bad situation after another by Half Face, the hardened criminal, including murder. However, by the time Mara Li brings the reader to the end of the plot, the reader may be rethinking everything that he or she had previously believed about the world, criminals, and what makes a person good or evil. Can a tormented and tortured soul find redemption? Li obviously is a student of human nature, watching and dissecting the whys and wherefores of human beings and their interactions. And it shows--this novella gripped me and didn't let go until I knew what happened at the end. I did not put it down until I was finished and I'm still not sure how I feel about the ending. Very, very good story!!!

A well-done debut novella!

I was given this eBook by the editor to read for review. I relish opportunities to read works by the not-quite-known authors and the not-yet-established authors. Even so, I was asked for an honest review and that is what I am here providing.

This is a good story; a novella that is well written and well developed. It is a stand-alone story without a cliffhanger (thank goodness!!!). Even with a conclusion provided, the author has allowed for the possibility for a follow-up story. Black Face, White Face is not a romance. It is a hostage-captor story in which the hostage maintains her fear and anger throughout -- more authentic to an actual hostage situation than romances where the hostage and her captor develop a love-interest. This story held my attention from the first chapter to the end - despite the interruptions, commitments and obligations being a mom of three kids entails. I read this in a day, which speaks for the story, as I am not usually able to muster the time to read a book in a day.

So why only a three-star rating? I'd like the ability to give half stars. It is better than "okay" and I liked it very much, but the ending felt rushed, lacking the detail and descriptions that made up the first 90% of the book and I felt the writer didn't really know herself how to describe the final courtroom scene or the intervening three years. The author does provide a chapter "three years later" and an epilogue, but the story does not feel concluded to this reader -- I want more information, more insight to their emotions, a better understanding of both Juliet's and Black's states-of-being.

Even with this, I recommend this story; it is well done and I am left wanting more. That, itself, may be recommendation enough... I read her book and the author left me wanting more!

Great debut!

3.5-4 stars!!

Going into this read, I had no expectations whatsoever. But boy was it something great!!

My first initial thoughts of this book before beginning it were, “is this s a forbidden romance of Stockholm syndrome?”. But no, it turned out not to be.

No, it was a story of absolution and redemption and finding yourself.

I liked how even through the harshest of situations and realities that both Juliet and “Half Face” were able to find a medium where they were able to bring out the best in each other and teach each other life's woes and whims.

I thought that they were a great balance as Juliet makes Half Face want to cling to the good and see the “small victories” in things and changes him for the better (and he for her).

My only complaint though in regards to this book is that I would have liked an even longer epilogue with more insight as to their physical and mental state of beings as there is a time gap between the epilogue and the chapter before. I mean, I get why the ending turned out that way but at the same time I would have loved to see a glimpse of more instead of feeling unfulfilled and unsatisfied and letting my mind wonder as to what was going on in the characters' minds at that point.

So over all, a great and well developed read but I just wish that the ending wasn't so conclusive and abrupt. I will absolutely be keeping an eye out more from this author as she makes a terrific entr�e to the writing world! Great debut Ms. Li!

So you're familiar with my background, I received a B.S. in Astrophysics and now I am a first year graduate student in an Applied Math program. I used this book as a supplementary resource when studying Partial Differential Equations - we got to Separation of Variables and then to Fourier Series. Every Physics student who graduates today has at least seen a Fourier Series (I hope). I didn't feel confident in my abilities so I bought this book to review.

Let me tell you, if this is your first time hearing about Fourier Series then this book is simply the BEST book to learn Fourier Series and much of the beautiful underlying theory behind Fourier Analysis! It's so well written and clear that I had absolutely no trouble following the text. I cannot express how clear and beautifully it is written, it is extremely rare for a math book at this level to be so vivid and eloquent! The proofs are easy to follow and the problems ease you into the subject presented in each section; which, in turn, are "bite-sized" and manageable. I studied the material by myself and walked away knowing Fourier Series.

There are plenty of good examples, the problems are great! If you're self-studying (or not) do as many of the problems as you can; if you read the previous two or three sections you should have absolutely no trouble going through the problems. Applications galore!

NOTE: This book isn't written at the graduate level, don't shy away from it because I mentioned being a grad student, I just wanted a review of Fourier Series. If I had to rate the level of the book I would say it's at a beginning upper-division level of a typical american university. If you've had a decent multi-variable calculus class, and are comfortable with partial derivatives, this book should be very comprehensible. It's clearer still to physics majors (or the like) who are more familiar with what and where specific equations apply to.

This book is beautiful, and I think it should be required reading of every physics and applied math student everywhere (maybe I'm just a little biased).

The ONLY caveat is that the Fourier Complex Series is left to problems, we don't get to use them to learn theory and get more comfortable with. This is okay since the cosine and sine series are equivalent to the complex series, it's just that the complex series is more elegant when doing problems or proving things.

If you are an advanced undergraduate student or a begining graduate student and want to learn not only the concepts behind Fourier Series but see how it can be applied to boundary value problems of mathematical physics, then this is "the" book you should read. It is well written - easy to understand and illustrated with lots of examples.

About the Author

Le Nguyen Binh is technical director of Huawei Technologies’ European Research Center, Munich, Germany. He holds a BE (Hons) and Ph.D from the University of Western Australia, Crawley. He has authored and co-authored more than 300 journal papers and eight books, in addition to several refereeing conferences. Previously, he was professorial fellow at Nanyang Technological University of Singapore; the Christian Albrechts University of Kiel, Germany; and several Australian universities. He also served as Chair of Commission D (Electronics and Photonics) of the National Committee for Radio Sciences of the Australian Academy of Sciences (1995–2005).
